young-adult-fiction-the-5th-waveIn case you haven’t heard, young adult novel sensation The 5th Wave, by Rick Yancey, is being adapted into a film. The second book in the trilogy, The Infinite Sea, is being released on September 16, 2014.

The series centers on Cassie, a 16 year-old girl who is one of only a few remaining humans alive on Earth after a series of alien attacks decimates the world’s population and destroys almost all of society. Cassie becomes entangled with Evan, an alien in human form, called a “silencer,” sent to Earth to destroy all humans. Toward the end of the novel, Cassie and Evan embark on a dangerous mission, the aftermath of which leaves Evan’s fate unknown.

In The Infinite Sea, we will see Cassie still searching for her brother, Sam, and getting closer to figuring out what the endgame is for the mysterious Others. Evan’s fate will be revealed, and don’t be surprised if we see Cassie getting closer to Ben, her childhood crush who is one of the remaining humans still fighting for survival.

The film adaptation is currently in pre-production, and is slated for release on January 29, 2016. Chloe Grace Moretz (If I Stay, Carrie) is signed on to play Cassie, and British newcomer Alex Roe is signed on to play Evan. Chloe is one of the most popular young adult actresses of her generation, having worked with some of Hollywood’s biggest young stars, such as Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), Asa Butterfield (Hugo), and Kodi Smit-McPhoe (Let Me In). Relatively new director J Blakeson (The Disappearance of Alice Creed) has been signed on to direct, and the film is being produced by Columbia Pictures, with distribution by Sony Pictures Entertainment.

January 2016 feels like an eternity to wait for the film to be released, but at least we’ll have book two, The Infinite Sea, to tide us over until then.
