INTO THE WOODS

Summed up as: IT’S HERE! IT’S HERE! The Disney live action film based on the Sondheim classic with the most killer cast this century.
Coolest thing about the trailer: OTHER THAN MERYL HERSELF, we think her onscreen reunion with Emily Blunt will make a fairytale in its own right.
Did they show too much? No! And we’re quite thrilled that Johnny Depp chose to stay in the background for once. At least in this teaser.
Worth seeing opening weekend? The biggest YES of the entire year.

NO CAMERAS ALLOWED

Summed up as: Just think of it! A series on MTV about…music!
Coolest thing about the trailer: How pirate-concert-filmer-turned-fledgling-music-videographer James Marcus Haney figures out ways to sneak into wherever he wants backstage.

Watch or DVR? Lets give props to MTV for working on something other than Sixteen and Pregnant.

Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb

Summed up as: The third go-round for Ben Stiller and company.
Funniest thing in the trailer: Rebel Wilson. Rebel Wilson. Rebel Wilson.
Coolest thing about the trailer: Ben Kingsley serving up full 80s Mannequin energy in full Pharaoh Egypt regalia.
Worth seeing opening weekend? No, but why not the second or third weekend when you have time?

SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS: SPONGE OUT OF WATER

Summed up as: Another party at movie theaters for the kiddies (and adulties) with Spongebob and friends!
Weirdest thing in the trailer: Definitely Antonio Banderas as the piratey villain.
Coolest thing about the trailer: The combo of traditional 2D animation (with S’bob as we know and love him) and the newfangled 3D CGI guy. But will it work?
Worth seeing opening weekend? Take the kids, and a break in the AC.

MARVEL RETROSPECTIVE

Summed up as: This is in fact a look back at Marvel Universe’s Phases I & II, but with some amazing peek-a-boo teasers to Age of Ultron.
Coolest thing about the trailer: Trying to pinpoint the new stuff from the old (but still cool). We’re suckers for a montage.
Weirdest thing: Trying to decipher the (so far) very weak link between Guardians and the rest of the Marvel galaxy.

TESTAMENT OF YOUTH

Summed up as: A wartime costume drama with a YA perspective that actually looks very well done.
Most beautiful thing in the trailer: Kit Harrington (of Pompeii and Game of Thrones)
Other most beautiful thing in the trailer: Captain America’s Hayley Atwell.
Worth seeing opening weekend? Only if this is your thing.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTELS (2ND TRAILER)

Most exciting thing in the trailer: Megan Fox (poor Megan Fox).
Weirdest thing: The Turtles themselves. They look weird. And not in a good way.
Did they show too much? No—and if the bullet-time slo-mo shot of one of the shelled foursome hitting a jeep on a snowy mountain is the best they can do, we are already underwhelmed.
Worth seeing it opening weekend? No. Hollywood has really got to stop regurgitating everything!

LOVE, ROSIE

Most exciting thing in the trailer: Lily Collins as not the prettiest girl around, and Sam Claflin (aka Finnick Odair!) looking cute as ever.
Weirdest thing: Definitely when the teacher, meant to lead by example, thinks it’s a good idea to project a clandestine online chat about a Sam’s loss of virginity for the entire class to see.
Did they show too much? No. We are intrigued!
Worth seeing it opening weekend? Depends if you prefer cutesy stuff like this, or Paranormal Activity 17 (we lost count, but the new comes out on the same day: Oct 24th).

FREQUENCIES

Most exciting thing in the trailer: The striking imagery at the very top, plus the general promise of perhaps a new addition to the burgeoning genre known as romantic sci-fi (dominated thus far by Another Earth and I, Origins director Mike Cahill).
Weirdest thing: The fact that the film doesn’t have an IMDB page.
Did they show too much? Not in this teaser. We want more.
Worth seeing it opening weekend? It’s a small film, but if you can get to it…

BOYHOOD

Most exciting thing in the trailer: The central concept and how it was executed. Hands down the most originally conceived film of the year.
Weirdest thing: The lead actor in his awkward years (the film is over a decade in the making, and it follows one actor throughout).
Worth seeing it opening weekend? For a newsworthy film by Richard Linklater (of the Before Sunrise series)? Yes, we think so!

LULLABY

Most exciting thing in the trailer: Garrett Hedlund all the way!
Weirdest thing: The amount of cancer-induced tearjerking drama condensed into one trailer, complete with a little bald girl getting her dying wish to go to prom.
Did they show too much? Just a bit (see above).
Worth seeing it opening weekend? We’re fans of Amy Adams (even after Man of Steel), so yes.

THE GIVER

Most exciting thing in the trailer: The leopard, Meryl’s voice and hair, and Alexander Skarsgard!

Weirdest thing:
Jeff Bridges’ speech impediment?

Did they show too much?
No—they finally got this right. After the minor uproar caused by the first version of the trailer, certain elements more faithful to the book have been included (including black and white footage).

Worth seeing it opening weekend?
A cinematic occasion to see Meryl Streep and Katie Holmes in the same film? You betcha!

GODZILLA

Most exciting thing in the trailer: Curiously, not the monster itself. The tsunami is pretty awesome. OK, and that tail shot is amazing too.

Weirdest thing: Bryan Cranston not in the HAZMAT suit, for once.

Did they show too much? Pretty much. If not with this one, then definitely with the final trailer.

Worth seeing it opening weekend? Uh, duh.

PING PONG SUMMER

Most exciting thing in the trailer: Lea Thompson (of Back to the Future) in another 80s movie!

Weirdest thing: Susan Sarandon drinking beer out of a pitcher.

Worth seeing it opening weekend? Yes, for the Wet Hot American Summer set.

All Cheerleaders Die

Most exciting thing in the trailer: The stunts. Definitely not the zombies, since these undead girls have clearly had a makeover.

Weirdest thing: The genre. Is this a zombie film? Wildly unclear.

Did they show too much? Since it isn’t clear what kind of film this really is, the answer is no.

Worth seeing it opening weekend? If you’re a fan of anything from Heathers to Jennifer’s Body, then go for it.

Trust Me

Most exciting thing in the trailer: The incredible cast, including Molly Shannon, Felicity Huffman, Sam Rockwell and Allison Janney.

Weirdest thing: When the big shot Hollywood agent says, “I’m just asking for a chance.”

Did they show too much? No, and the storyline features intriguing young actress Saxon Sharbino playing…an intriguing young actress, looking for an agent. Let’s see if this as good as Jerry Maguire.

Worth seeing it opening weekend? Wait for Rotten Tomatoes to decide.

Monkey King Reloaded

Most exciting thing in the trailer: Not a whole lot – this looks like a shameless rip-off of Kung Fu Panda.

Weirdest thing: Reloaded? There was a first film?

Did they show too much? Yes?

Worth seeing it opening weekend? For animation to be truly an ‘event’, it needs to at the very least be original. This is not that.
