While some other, less major developments happen to the secondary characters, “Claimed” focuses again on the bread and butter of Carl’s development. Carl and Carl Michonne bond in this episode – she tells him about a son that she had and Carl talks about his sadness at losing Judith. These two get to talking over breakfast. While we Judith’s alive, this trio thinks she died back at the Prison. It’s clear that Carl’s still wrecked over it as he becomes quiet immediately when it gets brought up. After Carl leaves, Rick thanks Michonne for cheering Carl up. Michonne makes it known that she wants to be a part of a family again and it seems like this is the one.
The trio decide to stay at the house while figuring out next steps. Since Rick isn’t back to 100 percent, Michonne and Carl head out for more supplies. Rick gives Carl his gun. Michonne and Carl bond further while consuming cans of Crazy Cheese. She apologizes for her slightly dorky moments and reveals that she had a toddler, Andre. Carl immediately feels for her. She opens up a little bit about what happened, prompting Carl to open up a little bit more, also. While Michonne and Carl will never won’t have the same relationship that either of them would have had with given family members, you can tell how happy they are to have found each other.
Back at the house, several intruders break in. After a tense few moments, Rick manages to throw the off. He runs out of the house toward Carl and Michonne telling them to run away. The trio is back to a life on the road. They make it to the tracks, not realizing they’re following Judith, Beth, Tyresse, Daryl, Carol, Lizzie, and Mika. They see a sign for Terminus that says, “Sanctuary for all. Community for all. Those who arrive survive.” They make a decision to continue to head toward Terminus.
