Brie Larson has had a long and impressive career. Before she became Captain Marvel and won an Oscar, she appeared in tons of tv shows and movies. Back in 2013, Young Entertainment Mag spoke with Brie Larson about her career and her film, Short Term 13. Who would’ve thought that in a few short years, she would be the star of 2019’s biggest Marvel movie! Listen to the full interview with Brie below:
Young Entertainment Mag: What motivated you to become an actor?
Brie Larson: I don’t’ really know exactly. I told my mother I wanted to be an actor when I was six years old. And I think my parents are still confused by it. They’re both chiropractors, they had a practice together. I watched a lot of shows as a child, but it wasn’t something that I had around me. So I’m not really sure – I think that’s one of the mysteries of life.
YEM: You played a main character on the United States of Tara. Was there a moment on that show when you realized you made it?
Brie: I think for me, just booking that show and then doing well within it. That I didn’t get overwhelmed and didn’t get consumed with the process. That I actually flourished in that environment was a huge thing for me. Because up until that point I had been doing small things. I had been doing independent film; I’d been trying really hard to get cast in things. And Toni Collette was one of my absolute heroes. So to be accepted into that world with them, I felt like I had kind of graduated in a way.
YEM: Tell us about Short Term 12 and your character Grace. What aspects of yourself were you able to bring?
Brie: Grace is a staff member at a foster care facility for at risk youth. The film revolves around Grace’s past coming to the surface while trying to be available and supportive to these kids that are also going through an emotional journey of their own. The thing that I really love so much about acting is the ability to be a chameleon and to see things from another perspective. So the thing that I would be able to bring to Grace, from not necessarily my personal life, but things that I studied and absorbed and kind of became a little sponge in order to play her honestly.
YEM: What was it like working with such a younger group of actors? How did you develop the chemistry, especially Kaitlyn Dever, who plays Jaden?
Brie: I felt that I related a lot to Kaitlyn. We have a lot of similar interests and she’s so incredibly talented. We had a great time working together. So not only did we have a great script to work with but we created a very unique friendship. And I think that’s what you see on screen.
YEM: What’s the one message you want viewers to take away from this movie?
Brie: You know, I don’t really want to say. I think the exciting part of the film is its universality and the fact that so many people find it emotionally resonating for different reasons. And I would really hate to rob someone of that experience.
YEM: What was it like working with Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller in The Spectacular Now?
Brie: They’re just the absolute best! I loved working with them. Shai is just magic
YEM: How do you juggle so many different acting jobs?
Brie: I’m not really sure! I’m just a creative person. Early on, my mom taught me that creation was the opposite of depression. And so to stay away from any negativity, and because I believe that I can really feel my mortality. It’s important for me to really keep working and keep exploring these abstract mediums in order to make sense of the things going on in my head and the world around me.
