Matthew Lamb Facetimes us to talk working with Kaitlin Olson while playing Elliot in new ABC crime drama High Potential

There’s a new crime drama in town with its own unique spin. High Potential premiered on ABC on September 17, and a new episode will be released every Tuesday at 10pm ET. Before the series release, we Facetimed with Matthew Lamb, who plays Elliot in the show to learn more about his experience on set.

High Potential follows Morgan, a single mom, with a high IQ whose unconventional knack for solving crimes leads to an unusual partnership with a by-the-book experienced detective.  Matthew’s character Elliot is Morgan’s son.

You may already recognize the actress who plays Morgan as the hilarious Kaitlin Olson from her role as Deandra in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The show also stars Daniel Sunjata, Javicia Leslie, Amirah J, Judy Reyes, and Deniz Akdeniz.

Matthew is a multi-talented star in theater, film, and television. He recently played the role of Frank Jr. in the Off-Broadway production of “Merrily We Roll Along”. His previous film and TV credits include “Smile” and “Only Murders in the Building” and he has two upcoming feature films coming out later this year!

For any young actors out there, Matthew was once in your shoes and admitted it took some time to book his first role but finding an agent who believes in you and never giving up on your dream will help you get there!

“You definitely have to be patient and you definitely have to work really hard, but never give up, hard work pays off.”

“I was crying tears of joy [when I got the role], I was so excited.”

Matthew said filming with his on-screen mom Kaitlin Olson was a great experience, and he even revealed a time where they had a heart-to-heart scene, and Kaitlin talked lines with Matthew behind the scenes to prepare.

“It’s like a masterclass watching [Kaitlin Olson] work and working with her, she is such a professional.”

While High Potential is billed as a crime drama, Matthew said the show is different from typical crime shows because it has witty and heartwarming moments and anyone who watches, no matter their age, can find a character to relate to.

“[From High Potential], people can take away how relatable the characters are and I feel like everyone can relate to one of the characters and that is what makes it fun.”

When there is down time on set, Matthew revealed his hidden talent is magic and he performs card tricks for his castmates. Of course, we had to ask Matthew to perform his best trick, and you’ll have to watch the interview to try and figure out how he does it!

Thank you, Matthew, for chatting with Young Entertainment. Make sure to follow him on his Instagram at @matthewlambofficial. Watch the rest of the interview where we ask more about Elliot’s wardrobe, working with the rest of the cast, and what he hopes people take away from the show. • One way to memorize lines is to practice “taking it off the page.” Read the line in your head and then look up and say the line out loud to commit it to memory.
