Young Adult Magazine: How old were you when you first starting singing?
Kirsten Price: When I was a toddler, around the age of 3, I would make up nonsense words and sing along to the Mozart piano concertos that my Dad would play on our record player.
YA: What do you most enjoy about this career?
KP: I think it is the creative process that keeps us all going and and having a career that forces me to engage with it every day is a gift.
YA: When did you first learn that your song would be played for the Secret Life of the American Teenager promo?
KP: My manager forwarded me an email letting us know a couple days before it aired.
YA: How did that make you feel? And what has been the result?
KP: I was surprised that the song was used so quickly. They had only just commissioned me to write it so it was great that it was placed so fast. I am assuming that it lead to more exposure, especially looking at the popularity of the song on iTunes.
YA: What was the process like in them picking your song and then asking you about it?
KP: It was a lot of fun. They pretty much left it wide open for me to do whatever I wanted which was both a blessing and a curse.
YA: Did you get to work with the producers in creating the promo?
KP: No, thankfully that’s not how it works. I am a music person, and would not have a clue how to help create a promo!
YA: When was New Day written? Is it about anyone specific?
KP: It was written in the kitchen of my mother’s house in her Deer Park in Devon, England. Not about a specific person.
YA: Where does the inspiration for this song come from and message are you trying to spread?
KP: The song is about turning over a new page, starting a new chapter. The message is of breaking free from negative experiences and writing your own story. We can’t change the past but we can change the future, that sort of thing.
YA: Where can we hear your music, do you go on tour? What else can we see coming from you?
KP: My music is distributed by all the usual suspects. iTunes, Spotify, e.t.c. I am currently in production on my 3rd solo studio album due out later this year.
YA: Do you watch Secret Life? Do you have a favorite character or storyline?
KP: I had no idea the show existed before my song ended up in the promo.
YA: How do you pick what music you listen to? And what music do you listen to?
KP: As a working producer I do a lot of active listening for soundscapes effects and arrangements in every genre you can think of. For pleasure I listen mostly classical European music and classic American Soul/Blues. I rely a lot on friends and colleagues to switch me on to new music.
