Since the limited series American Primeval released on Netflix on January 9, it has already cemented itself as one of the most successful new shows of 2025. We chatted with breakout actor Andrew P. Logan who stars as Lucas Cutter, as Andrew shared his inspiring journey toward booking the role and his experience filming in New Mexico.
American Primeval follows the gritty and adventurous exploration of the birth of the American West. Set in 1857 during the Utah War, the series examines the violent collisions of cults, religion and men and women fighting for control of the new world.
In addition to Andrew, the talented cast includes Derek Hinkey, Taylor Kitsch, Kim Coates, Betty Gilpin, Jai Courtney and more. Before booking this series regular role, Andrew was also known for his work in the 2024 film Rent Free and in the 2022 film Showdown on the Brazos.
We asked Andrew about the audition process that led to him making his Netflix debut and it was one of the most powerful and vulnerable stories we’ve heard. Andrew shared with us that he auditioned for the role of Lucas only a few weeks after his dad passed away, putting all his grief and emotion into his performance. He later met with director Peter Berg who said he wanted to make Lucas Cutter a series regular and gave him creative freedom to bring his character to life.
Andrew said he brought all the lessons and morals his dad instilled in him into this experience and he is a testament to keep going and never give up on your dreams.
“The morals and [lessons my dad] instilled in me and how I’ve taken that now and done something very cool with it, it is bittersweet.”
All the characters in American Primeval work with animals, and Andrew revealed he and many of the other actors attended a “cowboy camp” before filming, where they spent two months learning how to become expert horseback riders!
“All the actors and everyone in the cast went to Cowboy Camp. Essentially they taught us all how to become incredibly experienced horseback riders.”
Andrew’s character Lucas differs from the rest of the characters as he has heart and cares about animals and was often the one leading the horses. Andrew said he is really into method acting and while filming in New Mexico, there were a lot of blizzards and he said he wanted to embrace the cold because the characters are meant to be cold in the show. He also put a lot of time into training with the horses to accurately portray a skilled mountain man.
“Lucas has heart and he cares about animals.”
“I really wanted to be cold if my character was cold.”
In the series, Lucas is the younger brother of Virgil Cutter, played by Divergent and Suicide Squad star Jai Courtney. While on his first major TV set, Andrew said he learned a lot from Jai and it was fun to play the younger brother who loves to pester Virgil in the series.
“It was really cool for [Jai Courtney] to take me under his wing and show me the ropes.”

Consider this:
- Green actors are actors who lack extensive experience or are working on their first ever major production. If you are a green actor, embrace this new experience and lean on your agent and the cast and crew for support.
- Protect your character and make sure everyone on set respects your character. If you think your character would be doing something else in a scene, no matter how small or big, don’t be afraid to ask or talk about it with the director/rest of the cast and crew.
