For the first time ever, Walt Disney Animated Classics will bring to life Marvel comic book heroes on the big screen. The Big Hero 6 are a group of crime-fighting heros, much like the X-Men or The Avengers, created by Steven T. Seagle and Duncan Rouleau in 1998. After Disney bought Marvel Entertainment in 2009, they immediately began developing many different projects, such as Guardians of the Galaxy and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. After Big Hero 6 was confirmed to be an animated film, the production team decided that Hiro’s creation, Baymax, would be a robot, specifically a robot that was unlike any robot audiences have seen before. If you’ve seen the trailer for Big Hero 6, then you know they have achieved this with their chubby, inflatable version of Baymax.
The Big Hero 6 as they appear in the original comics
In the comics, the Big Hero 6 originally consisted of Hiro, a 13 year old boy genius, Baymax, Hiro’s creation and protector, Sunfire, a heat-blasting mutant, GoGo Tamago, a speedy, explosive “hothead,” Honey Lemon, whose mysterious Power Purse contains wormholes to infinite dimensions, and the Silver Samurai, who has the ability to conduct mutant energy through almost any substance. Other heroes came and went as more and more issues were published.
Disney has chosen most of the original characters for their version. Hiro, Baymax, Honey Lemon, and GoGo Tomago will all appear, but two later member of the Big Hero 6 have been selected, the jacked-up, finicky Wasabi, and the comic book fanboy Fred(Zilla).
Disney’s version of The Big Hero 6
The film takes place in fictional San Fransokyo, which will have elements associated with both San Francisco and Tokyo, particularly the fact that both are known as hubs for technological advancement.
Big Hero 6 opens on Friday, November 7.
