Chase Brown talks Lovecraft Country and Jordan Peele

Chase Brown is hitting screens in the new HBO series Lovecraft Country. The show premiered earlier this month and comes from Misha Green, Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams. Based on the novel of the same name, Lovecraft Country is a horror fiction set in the 1950s. It follows the story of Atticus Freeman as he travels across the U.S. in search of his missing father. Chase plays the role of ‘Young Atticus Freeman’ in the year 1934.  You may have seen Chase Brown last year in YoungBoy’s Lonely Child music video. This year, Chase joined the latest season of Tyler Perry’s “Ruthless” and “The Underground Railroad” from Amazon. After he took over our Instagram account, YEM spoke with Chase Brown about his new projects.

Young Entertainment Mag: Did you and Jonathan who plays the Adult Atticus Freeman get to talk about the role and how you would play it? What was that process like? Were there certain things you had to know about the way he play Atticus Freeman that helped?

Chase Brown: No me and Jonathan did not get to talk about the role. I spent my time with Michael K. Williams , who is Atticus Freeman’s father. The process went well and I did not have to know much about how he played Atticus Freeman.

YEM: Who is Atticus Freeman and can you speak to why it’s important for the audience to know the backstory?

Chase: Atticus Freeman is the son of Montrose Freeman, and Atticus is traveling across the United States to find his father. It’s always good to know the backstory because it helps to know what got him to the point where he is now.

YEM: Were there any scenes that were hard for you and how were you able to overcome it?

Chase: No, nothing I did was hard for me or required me to overcome anything. I had a good experience on the set.

YEM: Did you learn anything about the time period that you found interesting?

Chase: I found it interesting how they dressed and lived in those times. I have a grandmother that’s 84 that had already talked to me about things that happened in during the Jim Crow era so I learned a lot.

YEM: Did you get to work directly with Misha Green, Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams? What was that experience like?

Chase: I didn’t get to work directly with them. However It was a great TV set experience, and it’s one I’m grateful for and will remember.

YEM: What are you excited for the audience to see when they turn the TV on?

Chase: I’m just excited for the audience to see the tv show all together. With everyone watching more TV now I think it’s going to be something really good to watch and talk about different issues.

YEM: How have you been keeping up your craft during this time?

Chase: I’ve been keeping up my craft by working with my coaches. I’ve been reading a lot, and working on keeping up my computer skills.

YEM: Anything you can share with someone who wants to follow your career?

Chase: You can follow my journey on Instagram @chasebrownofficial & Twitter@chasebrownactor

YEM: Finally, what’s one thing you want people to know about you that they might not already know?

Chase: One thing I want people to know is that I love swimming and the beach.
