We’ve already broken down the multiple Stefan’s in The Vampire Diaries and our affections for them. But what about another main character with many doppelgangers? That’s right, we’re talking about Elena. Since Elena has a bit more of a complicated romantic history than Stefan, we’re running through our favorite Elena’s chronologically: the good, the bad and the Katherine. Without further ado….
Elena Gilbert
We couldn’t start this journey without talking about Elena has a human. When we first meet Elena she’s a cheerleader, honor student, and one of the most popular girls in the school. Coming off of a hard time after the death of her parents, she’s compassionate, curious, empathetic and wants to become a great writer. She compulsively journals and deals with some of the same problems as many teenagers like acclimating to a new school. She’s a little emo, but wouldn’t you be?
Vampire Elena
Elena’s history is very complicated. She’s the a surviving doppelganger but doesn’t in fact realize her supernatural connections until horrifying things start happening, namely her turn. Jeremy dies right around the time Elena has turned thanks to Damon. Because she had strong human feelings at the time of her death she has an especially fitful experience as a new vampire. As a result of Jeremy’s death, Vampire Elena turns off her emotions for a while and is totally horrid. While this unfolds much to the chagrin of everyone for a while, she becomes emotional once again after Matt’s death, also courtesy of Damon. Suffice to say, Elena as a vampire lacks a lot of the even-headed calmness we liked about the human version of Elena.
Katerina Petrova aka Katherine Pierce
While Katherine isn’t actually Elena, we couldn’t talk about the variations without talking about this most important of doppelgangers. Katherine can be seen as one of the strongest forces rooting Elena to Mystic Falls, and one of the most antagonistic. Katherine has tried to kill Elena multiple times, but Elena’s hands aren’t clean either…as she tried the same thing multiple times. We will say we like Katherine’s sassiness and adventurous side, she’s full of surprises.
Amara and Tatia
Although much isn’t known about the original Petrova members, we do have Amara to thank for starting it all. Amara was the world’s first immortal woman and was born out of betrayal of Qetsiya to be with Silas. Thus, we know the bonds of treachery run all the way down through Tatia, Katherine and ultimately Elena. Amara was subject to the difficulties of love. Of Tatia, we know she descended from Amara and lived in America during the 11th century as a contemporary of the Mikaelson family. Her beauty was known to be so great as to cause both Elijah and Klaus to fall in love with her. Tatia ultimately sacrificed herself.
