Ethan William Childress is excited for mixed-ish Season 2!

MIXED-ISH - In "mixed-ish," Rainbow Johnson recounts her experience growing up in a mixed-race family in the '80s and the constant dilemmas they had to face over whether to assimilate or stay true to themselves. Bow's parents Paul and Alicia decide to move from a hippie commune to the suburbs to better provide for their family. As her parents struggle with the challenges of their new life, Bow and her siblings navigate a mainstream school in which they're perceived as neither black nor white. This family's experiences illuminate the challenges of finding one's own identity when the rest of the world can't decide where you belong. Ethan William Childress can be seen each week on the ABC comedy series “mixed-ish.” The show is a spin-off of the hit show black-ish. On mixed-ish, Ethan plays Johan Johnson, Rainbow’s younger brother. The show is set in this 80’s sitcom and depicts growing up in a mixed race family. And the show was recently renewed for its second season! YEM spoke with Ethan William Childress about being part of the Johnson family!

Young Entertainment Mag: How did you first get into acting?

Ethan William Childress: I auditioned for a Showcase put on by Adrian R’Mante. From the minute I walked into the audition it hit me, this is what I want to do.

YEM: You star on the hit show “mixed-ish,” which is a spin-off of “black-ish”. Were you familiar with “Black-ish” before being cast on the show?

Ethan: I was not. I only watched episodes of the show after I got the part. I wanted to see who Johan grew up to be.

YEM: The show is set in the 80s. Did you know anything about the 80s before joining the show?

Ethan: Not really. I did listen to music from the 80’s because my parents are always listening to old school music like that.

YEM: What is it like to play a character who lives in the 80s?

Ethan: I really enjoy it. I really love Johan’s B-Boy look. Getting to dress like Run DMC and LL Cool J is pretty cool.

YEM: You play Johan, Rainbow’s younger brother. Do you have any siblings in real life?

Ethan: I do. I have 1 older sister and 2 older brothers. I am the youngest. So it’s fun getting to play a middle child.

YEM: Tell us about Johan. What is he like?

Ethan: Johan is fun and has a really good outlook on life. He’s adventurous. He is kind. He’s confident and naïve at the same time. Like he thinks he is really good at something when he’s really not.

YEM: Do you have any similarities with Johan?

Ethan: Yes, for sure. I am adventurous and outgoing. We both always look at things from a positive viewpoint. I wouldn’t say that I am as naïve as Johan. I think I’m confident about some things, but also know when I’m really not the greatest at something.

YEM: Finally, what would you like to see in season two of mixed-ish?

Ethan: Great question! I would love to see Johan have some more adventures, like cop camp and taking karate. Those were really fun to shoot and showed how Johan loves trying new things no matter what the outcome. Also anything to do with sports or possibly a vacation. I mean look at how much of an adventure it was just going to Grandpa’s Country Club.
