With Disney’s Frozen, the spunky animated version of the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairytale “The Snow Queen”, the studio put yet another crown jewel in their long list of hits in theaters. And true to form, both the film itself and the theme song “Let It Go” have been nominated for top film honors at this year’s Oscars.
After YA’s predictions for the Best Film Song of 2013, the Academy Award nominations were released and we were right about a bunch (but not about the dark horse—and recently disqualified—song “Alone Yet Not Alone”). Now that competition is even tighter, the question on everybody’s mind is—who will perform the sure favorite “Let It Go”? (It’s the favorite not only because it’s a great song, but because it’s Disney, which historically has taken home this prize the most.)
So will it be Idina Menzel, the Tony-winning Broadway veteran (Elphaba!) who performed the song in character in the film, or will it be Demi Lovato, the young singing sensation who performed the single version of the song and has already chaired as a judge on The X Factor? It is our humble opinion that Idina’s version is the more heartfelt—Menzel is no stranger to the Disney sensibility, having appeared in the much-loved Enchanted (although not as a singer). Then again, Demi also knows Disney well – the actress/singer has been working with the House of Mickey since way back in 2006 on As the Bell Rings.
