With a name like Guinevere, this up-and-coming artist is just begging to be noticed. Pay attention, her name isn’t going anywhere soon. Guinevere is a new pop diva, the likes of which we haven’t seen since the golden age of Britney, Mandy and Cristina. Guinevere is decidedly darker than some of her bubble-gum counterparts and all the more loveable for it. An admitted sci-fi junkie and gamer, Guinevere has edge and sass in the perfect proportions. She commands attention and her songs are earworm worthy. To learn more about pop’s newest superstar, we had the chance to talk to her directly about what it was like being a young adult, her path to stardom, her love of sci-fi and what’s next on her plate. You’ve recently wrapped a tour. Tell me a little more about the venues? How many cities did you play? Which was the most memorable college and why?
The past year went by in a blink of an eye. [We hit] 200 shows in over 50 cities – all over the U.S. and Germany. I think the most incredible experience was playing in Chicago in front of 50,000 people. The rush of adrenaline was indescribable and the energy of the crowd was amazing. Every show was a great experience and memory. The stage is my home.
Tell me a little bit about yourself when you were a young adult…where did you grow up? What were you like in school?
I grew up in the suburbs of Toronto, Canada. I went through many different stages in high school from athlete to drama kid and finally found my path to music.
How did you get your start in music?
I had always been around music growing up and entered a bunch of singing contests. I really fell in love with it when I was 16 and formed a band called ‘Get Rebel’. I was the lead singer of an Indy/Rock band and knew it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
What has been your biggest success to date?
This past year of touring is what I would call a success. Each time I would go back on tour, I was playing bigger venues and more fans were coming to see me. [Reaching out to more and more people and connecting] is the ultimate success to me.
Your music videos have a really unique and distinctive style – tell me a little more about your vision as an artist and your image.
The video ‘Crazy Crazy’ was my debut to the world. I had put together very futuristic elements that tie into my love for Sci-Fi (Star Trek, Star Wars). I am constantly growing and developing as an artist and my goal is for fans to be able to connect with me on a personal level. I love infusing many of my hobbies and passions in my music.
Your new single “Fly Away” is really authentic. Is it about anyone in particular? How did you come up with the concept for the song?
When you break up with someone you love it can make you feel empty and you think you’ll never be able to get over it. Fly Away is capturing the moment you realize it’s going to be ok. It’s the moment you feel whole again. It’s a liberating feeling. Fly Away should make you feel free.
Who are some of your favorite artists or bands?
My favorite era is 1960-79. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Fleetwood Mac. I’m really getting into Otis Redding, Sam Cooke and Etta James. Call me an old soul.
Who would you most like to work with?
I would have loved to work with Jimi Hendrix but he is no longer with us. In today’s industry it would be great to work with Kid Cudi because of his unique sound or even Frank Ocean.
What do you have coming up?
I’m about to embark on a 2-month radio tour promoting my new single Fly Away. I leave for Miami in a week; I can’t wait to get back out there again!!
What can you tell others pursuing the same career?
Surround yourself with people you trust. Build your team and never do something you know in your heart is wrong. Stay true to your craft and treat everyone with respect.
What’s your favorite book or what book are you currently reading?
One of my favorite things to do on the road is read. Right now I’m about 50 pages into the Great Gatsby…The parties have just begun!
