Netflix’s newest series “Insatiable” has been making a ton of buzz. The series, starring Debby Ryan, follows Patty, who was previously overweight. But after losing weight over the summer, she returns to school ready to seek revenge on her bullies. YEM spoke actress Kimmy Shields, who plays Nonnie Thompson, about the new dark comedy show.
YEM: How did you first get involved in acting?
Kimmy Shields: At the age of six in a production of Alice in Wonderland.
YEM: You’re in the Netflix show Insatiable! What is it like to be a part Netflix series?
Kimmy: Yes I am! It was tremendous. This was my third performance in a Netflix show, but the first in a Series Regular position, so to say I am excited is a severe understatement.
YEM: The show stars Debby Ryan. Were you familiar with her work before you were cast on the show?
Kimmy: Debby’s entrance into the Disney zeitgeist was around the same time as my exit from Disney Channel viewership (as a teenager trying to make herself seem cooler), but she is sugar and spice and everything nice.
YEM: What was your audition process like?
Kimmy: Very smooth, which still blows me away. Auditioning can often feel like this daunting process that feels like a road to nowhere, but through each of my four auditions to this role, I was guided with nurturing hands and embraced like one of Casting’s own, which meant the world.
YEM: Tell us about your character? Do you relate to your character at all?
Kimmy: Nonnie is a cool chick. She is loyal, funny, clever, and creative. If I say I relate to her it’ll just sound like I’m just bragging about myself, but I would say we share similar qualities in that I always want what’s best for my friends and will do whatever it takes to make them smile.
YEM: If you could collaborate with any actor, who would it be?
Kimmy: There are so many talented actors that I can never zero in on one in particular, but if there are any great character actors who don’t take themselves too seriously that want to work with me I will be there, no questions asked.
YEM: Do you have any other projects that you’re working on?
Kimmy: I’m not currently working on anything, but you will find me briefly in the upcoming films Charlie Says and Ad Astra, both due out next year.
