We caught up with drummer Corey McClaine to find out what the future holds for these talented insomniacs.

Corey McClaine: Hey there,  My name is Corey McClaine and I play Drums and Percussion for the band Instead of Sleeping.

Young Adult Mag: How long have you all been together and how did you meet?
CM: We have been a band since 2008 with Shaun, Woody, and Tony who all went to high school together. Shaun met Corey at a party that got busted at RMU in 2009, Corey told shaun if he ever needed a drummer to let him know. Long story short, IOS lost their current drummer and was looking for someone to fill a date of an upcoming show. Corey stepped in and has been in the band ever since. In 2012 IOS lost their bassist, Tony. Jeff was a friend that we had made through playing different shows with his other band. Jeff filled in for a couple out of town dates that Tony couldn’t do and became a permanent member shortly after.

YA: Who does most of the songwriting in the band?
CM: It’s mostly Shaun that comes in with a little idea or part and we all mess around with it a little bit, then next practice Shaun will bring more to that idea and we form a song out of it. This last album we wrote and recorded with Marc McClusky who was also apart of the songwriting on Young Lungs. This was the first time that we all ventured into songwriting as a joint effort such as writing lyrics and melodies.

YA: Volatile, your first song from the album, definitely has shades of Sweet Disposition by Temper Trap.  Any other influences or contemporaries that you admire
CM: That actually came up when we wrote that guitar riff! SD is a really cool tune but we didn’t pull any influences from it.

YA: To help our readers get to know you better, can one of you share an embarrassing secret about your childhood?
CM: This is really tough, hmmm.. I really can’t think about anything I would be embarrassed about thats a secret. I feel like I am really dropping the ball on this one but Ive got nothing. I used to pack outfits for trips in Ziplock bags, like the complete outfit socks, underwear, jeans, and T-Shirt. Id even write what day to wear it on. I really think thats the only thing people would not know. hahaha

YA: What’s the music scene like in Pittsburgh?
CM: It is really cool, there are a lot of different types of bands out here. Theres a handful of really cool Indie bands that I really enjoy listening to.

YA: What are your aspirations as a band?  At what point do you think you’ll be able to call yourselves truly successful?
CM: Well, I am never content and want to push further but we are pretty successful right now. Success for us was definitely getting the opportunity to work with a well known producer to help transform our sound into something that we could not do on our own. On top of that a huge breath of success was that fact that we were able to fund so much through our kick starter that was completed successfully. We will keep pushing though and see where this album gets us. It is our goal to go from city to city selling out show after show, I guess that will be the next breath of success that we will receive.

YA: What’s it like as indie rockers on the road together?  Can you share any insights into what you get up to keep yourselves amused on your tour bus?
CM: It’s a lot of fun for sure. I miss it because we have not traveled since the writing and recording of this record. I can’t wait to get back out there and just have a blast rom state to state. We usually just talk on the road, talk about girls, other bands new releases, and stuff we want to do musically when we get home. I think thats the best boredom buster right there, communication.

YA: Have you had any crazy fan experiences yet?
CM: I signed this rather large kids boob once…. that was interesting. Other than that, no not really. Our fans are so cool to us, we have friends/fans that will let us crash at there place and make us food. Its really cool to say no matter where we go we have someone that we could stay with.

YA: What does the rest of 2014 hold for Instead of Sleeping?
CM: There is a lot of stuff coming up, we are releasing a music video for Speak Into Me onpurevolume.com. We are holding a CD release show June 27th here in Pittsburgh. Apart from those events there will be a lot of push on this album. We will be gone just about every weekend hitting up old cities as well as new ones touring on this release.

YA: If you could support any band or artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
CM: It would be really cool to hit the road with Portugal. the Man and The Black Keys. Those guys have such a neat sound I would love to see them every night. I also feel that there is a lot we could learn from those guys being on the road together.

YA: What five songs are playing on your iPod right now?
CM: I actually listen to a lot of Top 40 as well as altnation on sirius/xm.  So there is a lot of viriety in my everyday listening. If I could pick the Top 5 right now it would be:
