Disney is back with a new witchy series Coven Academy, which is set to premiere October 1st on Freeform and on October 2nd on Disney+ and Hulu. We Facetimed exclusively with Jordan Leftwich who plays Sasha. She revealed her wild audition process for this project, her experience working with Malachai Barton and show creator Tim Federle, and the iconic vampire she took inspiration from in playing Sasha.

“There will be a few jaw dropping moments and love building as well.”

Coven Academy follows a trio of teenage witches-in-training who are destined to project their city against dangerous and ancient forces. The show’s creator Tim Federle is best known for his work on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and the show also stars Malina Weissman, Tiffany Thiesson, Sway Bhatia and more. Jordan’s character Sasha is intelligent and at the top of her class, serving as a great guide!

“Tim Federle brought a sense of comfort to me.”

Jordan revealed this was one of the craziest audition processes she’s ever been through! She was especially nervous for it, as she has always dreamed of working on a Disney project. She even did a chemistry read for both the characters of Sasha and Briar.

“This was the craziest casting process I’ve ever been through!”

While she was nervous, Jordan said creator Tim Federle helped ease those nerves by being so kind during the process. And even through nerves, Jordan ended up being the perfect Sasha!

Jordan also grew up as a ballet dancer and while Sasha doesn’t dance in the series, she said her training definitely helped her posture as an actor.

“Some of my ballet background has helped with my posture as an actor.”

This was such a fun cast to work with, especially with Disney star Malachi Barton, and Jordan called him a hoot, recalling such fun memories that they had while filming.

There have been so many iconic vampires in television and movie history, and Jordan revealed she took the biggest inspiration from none other than Bonnie Bennett from The Vampire Diaries. Talk about such a good character to build from!

“If Sasha was going to revolve around a witch that we’ve had in the past, it could be Bonnie Bennett.”
