“I knew this was going to take me places.”Skylar Ebron talks first major TV role as young Cordelia Cupp in hit Netflix murder mystery The Residence

The Residence, a new comedic murder mystery from Shonda Rhimes, hit Netflix last week and is a classic whodunit set at the White House. Before the show’s release, we Facetimed with Skylar Ebron, who stars as a young Cordelia Cupp to learn more about perfecting her character’s quirks and her experience on set.

Set in the “upstairs, downstairs and backstairs” of the White House, Cordelia Cupp, an eccentric detective, arrives to solve a murder that occurred during a state dinner. During the investigation, conflicts between 157 personnel of the residence unfold. Uzo Aduba stars as Cordelia Cupp, Susan Kelechi Watson plays Jasmine Haney, Randall Park plays Edwin Park, and the popular show includes so many more star-studded guest roles.

In addition to The Residence, Skylar also made a cameo in  Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Christmas Ringer

“After a while I got used to [the routine] and the flow and it really helped me and I think it’ll help me in future roles as well.”

This was one of Skylar’s first major TV roles, and she said while she was originally nervous filming her self tape, she had great advice of telling herself that this is just the start of an incredible opportunity, and whether she booked it or not, she would learn something along the way. Lucky for us, Skylar was the perfect fit for young Cordelia Cupp!

“I kind of let myself drop all the nerves and really get into it.”

Like the older version of herself, young Cordelia has many quirks and Skylar embodied all of them. From perfecting Cordelia’s stance and posture to getting down her ‘daydreaming’ expression, she worked hard to understand her character.

“Cordelia is sort of quirky and out of the box.”

Skylar’s favorite memory and experience on set was getting to meet and work with Reagan Joi Grant, who plays her young sister Aimee Cupp in the show. Reagan and Skylar are very close in age so they bonded on and off set and remain friends to this day!

“Me and [Reagan] still keep in touch to this day so it’s really nice.”

In addition to being one of her first major roles, it was also Skylar’s first time in Los Angeles on set. She fully took advantage of the entire experience, getting to know everyone, from the crew to the background actors. Skylar even revealed she has dreams of one day working on the tech side of entertainment, whether it be on the camera, lighting or theater side!

“I would love to be a stage manager for something one day.”

Consider this:

  • Take the time to get to know or have a conversation with everyone on set, from background actors to crew members. You never know when those connections might lead in your future career or personal life.
  • A great time to memorize lines is right before bed. Oftentimes, you’ll remember them better in the morning.
