Frank L Baum
Frank L. Baum is one of the most beloved authors, well, ever. We got the chance to parse out some of our most pressing questions for him…from beyond the grave!

Young Adult: What is your favorite adaptation of your work?

L. Frank Baum: It may sound trite, but I really do love the MGM version of the book. It seems to have the most longevity. I do also, however, carry a soft spot in my heart for The Wiz. The soundtrack was very creative.

YA: How do you feel about Judy Garland as Dorothy?

LFB: To be honest, I didn’t think she could pull it off at first. Once I saw her in full makeup and hair, though, I felt much better about it. She definitely can carry a tune!

YA: What are your thoughts on Wicked?

LFB: I loved it! Idina Menzel is amazing, I felt horribly about what John Travolta did to her name at the Oscars. I also loved that Kristin Chenoweth, too.

YA: How do you feel about the appropriation of the witches into many other stories besides Wicked like Once Upon A Time and Into The Woods?

LFB: I don’t feel ownership over the idea of a Wicked Witch…it’s been around in storytelling for as long as humanity. I am flattered, however, when she’s portrayed with specifics that were included in Oz, like the striped tights.

YA: Who do you most identify with in the original story?

LFB: Well it’s hard not to say the Wizard as he struggled with creative identity and a great many other things I feel. However, I think my family would say I’m most like the Scarecrow.

YA: Any thoughts on Oz the Great and Powerful?

LFB: The cast was stellar. I thought some of the effects were a little over the top, but maybe that’s a providence of my time.

YA: Who is your favorite author?

LFB: I’m going to take a pass on this questions – I wouldn’t want to offend any friends!
