YA Magazine: How did you get into writing?

Margaret Mitchell: Growing up in the south there are only so many ways to stay sane in those oppressive summers. Mine was exploring the depths of my imagination and trying to make sense of what was going on around me.

MM: Three years once I actually devoted myself to it full-time

YA: Was your family supportive?

MM: My husband encouraged me to write the book, if for no other reason than to get the story out and return to my regular life full-time. He bought me the typewriter I wrote it on.

YA: What was your biggest inspiration?

MM: The stories I heard growing up about the war greatly impressed me. I was an avid reader also, and that largely contributed to embarking on the process of writing the book.

MM: I’m beyond humbled that it has received the overwhelming reception it has. I never set out to write a book that would be adapted I just told a story I thought needed to be told. The performances were stunning.

YA: How would you feel about a remake?

MM: I say let well enough alone.

YA: Do you think the film stayed true to your vision of the story?

MM: I think they’re separate entities and both can stand alone.

YA: If you could cast someone as Rhett Butler who would you pick?

MM: Brad Pitt with dark hair.

YA: Who are some other authors you enjoy?

MM: I like Alexandra Fuller and Piper Kernan a lot.

YA: Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

MM: Read all of the time. Listen when people tell stories. Research. Then throw it all out the window.
