So, Pen15 is a Hulu series written and directed by Anna Konkle. It is set in middle school all the way back in the year 2000. Comics Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle play versions of themselves as 13 year olds in middle school. In this world, thirteen never ends for them and neither does the pains of growing up.
The special is titled “Jacuzzi” and from the looks of the trailer, there are ALOT of awkward moments happening. So, the girls are on vacation with Curtis to Florida and are introduced to the anxiety crippling pains of insecurities. At first, the girl tries to ignore them and accept themselves for who they are but fate does not want it that way. At the stroke of a pen, the girl’s bodies turn into any shape, form, and size.
Of course it does not work in the girl’s favors. For example, in the trailer Anna’s nose morphs into a pointy witch like one. As a result, the girls’ already existing social anxiety and awkwardness meets a new level. Hopefully, the girls learn how to overcome this and find out how to be comfortable in their own skin.
It’s not just physical insecurities the girls go through on the family trip to Florida. There are temptations of new boys, fake tans, and boardwalk caricature artists are too hard to resist. Of course, the girls can’t resist. In turn, they end up in pretty awkward situations. Damn, these girls can not get a break.
