You’ve read the book, you’ve seen the trailers…Yes, it might be the umpteenth film adaptation of a work of young adult literature, but The Maze Runner features an excellent up-and-coming cast and remarkable look that’s making us think more than twice about writing it off. Here’s what we’re most excited to see translated onto the silver screen:
The Maze
Eternally complex, ethereally foreboding, the ever-changing labyrinth at the center of this story keeps you hooked in its mystery.
Thomas risks everything to help Minho and Alby
In a moment of decisiveness and quick thinking, Thomas runs into The Maze just before the walls would crush him. He’s the hero—it’s his job to do stuff like this! (Look for this moment in the trailer.)
The Grievers
Both dumb and extremely, extremely dangerous, these sluggish, barbed creatures stalk the Gladers and hold dark and disturbing secrets beyond what you’d usually expect…
‘Wicked is Good’
When the only girl, Teresa, shows up, the plot certainly thickens. She arrives with several cryptic messages, including a curious new tattoo. And nothing is the same afterward.
First look at The Glade
Underneath any seeming utopia, lies an unsettling dystopia. Same goes here; it might look like a calm, serene, sun-drenched glen, but the Glade, of course, is surrounded by a terrifying and complex Maze.
Finding a nice corner to sleep in
Glimpsed at in the trailer, the Glade serves as some measure of protection for the boys, and Thomas succeeds in finding a nice place to sleep his first night. He is suddenly aware of the fact that the place seems somehow familiar to him…
Chuck plays a prank on Gally
On Thomas’s first night in the Glade, Slopper Chuck (named for Charles Darwin) has an original way of welcoming the new arrival: taking him along for an ill-timed prank on whoever is using the bathroom. But Gally is the last Glader you want to mess with.
Thomas and Teresa’s telepathic connection
Teresa is a young woman of many mysteries, and when Thomas realizes he can hear her in his head, their connection naturally deepens.
Thomas decides he is a Runner
As with many weighty and risky decisions, when Thomas realizes he wants to be a Runner, it’s for no readily apparent reason—it’s just what he knows to be true. And he rises to this challenge with aplomb.
The book’s conclusion
We don’t want to give anything away of course, but we will say that there are sequels in this book series. And we truly hope that the movie stays faithful to the way the book ends, unlike another recent YA adaptation (we are talking about The Giver)…
