ABOUT THE ALBUM: Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard the folk-rock magnificence that is Kings of Leon. Their debut album in 2003 was a success of next level magnitude and their follow up did massive numbers as well. However, this level of fame and scrutiny can cause artists to have difficulty in planning follow-ups, as was the case with Mechanical Bull. Which is why the band took matters into their own hands. Band member Caleb Followill said, “It feels like it’s a shame that we waited so long to do it. We can go in there and rehearse or goof off.” Matthew, added: “The pressure was really off of us on this last one. We were our own bosses. There were no bills because we bought the studio ourselves; there was no timeframe when it had to be done by. Us being able to take a break, we kind of got to fall back in love with what we loved about it in the first place, which was picking up your instruments and playing and smiling onstage and actually having fun, and not feeling like it’s a job.” The band participated in a Q&A with fans on Twitter last month where they revealed a few more tidbits such as the “vibe” of the record is comparable to their first two albums but that the tracks are more a “culmination” of their earlier work.
SINGLE SPOTLIGHT: “Supersoaker” retains the youthful sound of their previous records but shows growth in a positive direction. It sounds joyful with tinges of sadness at the same time that makes for a deeply compelling listen.
