New Book Of The Day

Original author: H. A. Swain

Hungry coverSYNOPSIS:

In the future, food is no longer necessary—until Thalia begins to feel something unfamiliar and uncomfortable. She’s hungry.

In Thalia’s world, there is no need for food—everyone takes medication (or “inocs”) to ward off hunger. It should mean there is no more famine, no more obesity, no more food-related illnesses, and no more war. At least that’s what her parents, who work for the company that developed the inocs, say. But when Thalia meets a boy who is part of an underground movement to bring food back, she realizes that most people live a life much different from hers. Worse, Thalia is starting to feel hunger, and so is he—the inocs aren’t working. Together they set out to find the only thing that will quell their hunger: real food.

WHY SHOULD YOU CHECK IT OUT?

At first, Thalia’s world doesn’t sound that bad.  Who hasn’t wished they didn’t need to keep eating or decide what to eat?  But then the negatives hit: no more of your favorite drink, no more new flavors, no more sweet or salty or spicy of savory!  The concept alone is enough to draw us to this dystopian future.

At a glance, the cover might make one think ZOMBIES or SUPERPOWERS!  But the plot is just as intriguing the way it is.  And the cover, with its jaggedly bent fork tongs, is creepy and eerie.

This is H. A. Swain’s debut—but might this be the pen name of Heather Swain (‘Josie Griffin Is Not A Vampire’)?  If so, then this is likely a huge divergence from her more comedic paranormal novel.  We can’t wait to find out!

EARLY REVIEWS SAY…

[T]he sensation-saturated world that Swain describes gives the story fresh interest. (Publishers Weekly)

[A] page-turner that wants a sequel. Emotionally satisfying dystopia with a generous helping of forno. (Kirkus Reviews)
