Get ready to have your heart stolen by Gina Rodriguez, who stars as the title role of the new CW television series Jane the Virgin. Gina has been appearing on television as well as in film for almost a decade, but her role as the vestal Jane is her first major, starring role.
Gina attended NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and trained at the Atlantic Theatre Company and Experimental Theatre Wing. Her most notable stage role was her portrayal of Frida Kahlo in Casa Blue: The Last Moments in the Life of Frida Kahlo at the American Stage Theatre.
Critics took note of Gina at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival for her portrayal of the title character in the indie drama Filly Brown . Gina plays Majo Tonorio, a struggling rapper who is attempting to balance her burgeoning hip-hop career and her disintegrating family, and earned herself an Imagen Award for Best Actress in a Feature Film.
Gina was cast on many TV series, such as Law & Order, Eleventh Hour, 10 Things I Hate About You, and Happy Endings, among others. Her largest TV role before Jane was her brief stint on The Bold and the Beautiful, as Beverly, an intern for the legendary Forrester company.
Jane The Virgin stars Gina as a devout Catholic woman who is still holding on tightly to her “precious flower,” having made a vow to wait until marriage to experience the act of love, even though she is happily engaged to the very patient detective Michael (Brett Dier). After a mixup at the gynecologist, Jane is accidentally artificially inseminated. To make matters worse, the sperm came from a man who is not only her new boss, but her former teenage crush (Justin Baldoni).
We’re very glad to welcome Gina to the CW family, and can’t wait to see what she does next.
Jane The Virgin premieres Monday, October 13 at 9:00 on The CW.
