Peter Pan has fascinated for over a century now, but what if there were more to the tale than the sweet boy who could fly? When the finale of season 2 of “Once Upon A Time” aired, it was clear Rumplestiltskin may have ties to the island of Lost Boys and their leader.

The show runners Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis have been teasing audiences with the idea of introducing Peter Pan in season 3 for some time. Introducing such a well known character, however, comes with its attendant problems. How would they frame him? How would he fit in with the existing characters in the realm?

It’s already been established that Mr. Gold has a past with Captain Hook since Hook stole his wife. We also know that when Baelfire left Fairy Tale Land through the portal as a boy, he wound up for a short time with Hook. But is there more?

“In true Mr. Gold/Rumple style, he knows more than Greg and Tamara,” Kitsis and Horowitz said, “and there’s certainly the implication that there’s a history there, one we’re eager to unfold.”

“Our approach to Peter Pan is one we’re super-excited about,” Horowitz said. “We knew we wanted to build to what we’re about to do in Season 3.”

We also learned in the finale that the Lost Boys were bringing Baelfire to “him.” When we see the sketch, however, it becomes clear Baelfire was not the boy wanted after all. It was Henry and that is why Tamara and Greg kidnapped him and took him to Neverland. So what does Peter Pan want with Rumplestiltskin’s grandson? Does Mr. Gold know the answer but chooses to keep it to quiet for now? Given the clues from the show’s creators, it’s probable he does.

In tying up loose ends, Belle regained her memory in the season finale, and Mr. Gold left her in charge of keeping Storybrooke safe while a large amount of the Storybrooke population travels with Hook to Neverland to try and find Henry. While she won’t be with the rest of the gang, fans will see more of Belle during the next season. The character is returning as a regular character for season three. Viewers will have to wait until fall to learn more of the dark side of Pan, however. We will be here with bated breath.
