An Election Poem
They came from all over
From country and town;
They made it from Boston
From Charleston, they drove down.
They came in on Subways
They came in their cars;
They came by the moonlight
They came by the stars.
They lined up for hours
As long as it took;
They stood reading papers
Or maybe, a book.
They talked about nothing
Or matters quite weighty;
Some had just turned eighteen
Others were well over eighty.
Some were new to the country
Others born here;
But where freedom allowed
They always drew near.
As each shuffled in
To the little gray booth;
They avoided eye contact
And looked quite aloof.
For this thing they did
Was a private affair;
And required much forethought
To handle with care.
And then, it was time
To make the big choice;
To mark down the name
And give Democracy a voice.
For this was the day
One day in November;
When we elect our Prez
Yes, a day to remember!
