Reign is our new favorite show thanks to many thingss – the great music, the juicy plotlines and the beautiful actors and actresses don’t hurt either. These things all contribute to making the show utterly watchable, but we wanted to take a minute and focus on the fashions of Reign. Without being over the top or in your face, the costumes and accessories used on the show really help transport you into the court…but still manage to look desirable for today. So without further ado, here are our top 5 picks for outfits on Reign this season!
We love Mary in her many, many, many looks but this gown / flower crown combo is an early standout. She was seen in this ensemble in S1E2 called “Snakes In The Garden” She’s wearing a long sleeve lace gown by J. Mendel, a belt by Untamed Petals, a Honeycomb flower crown and her classic inauguration ring by Gillian Steinhart, seen below.
Steinhart has talked about the rings in previous interviews saying, “Meredith (Markworth-Pollack-costume designer) said she needed sort of an inauguration ring and she didn’t want it to be a jewel; she wanted something that looked like it had been passed through time…That’s why I took this idea of a cameo, or a coin— something really, really antique. So I built something with a crude-quality to it. It’s not very refined. It looks like its had centuries of life before we see it.” We love the ring and it’s seen on Mary throughout the season.
One of the things that we love about Reign style is as much as items are luxurious and seemingly one of a kind, the costume department manages to reconfigure certain pieces for multiple characters. That brings us to our second look, a stunning corset by LA based brand Les Habitudes. You can see the piece here on Kenna in the second episode, styled with a shawl and larger earrings.
If you look closely, you can also see Mary wearing the same piece in a different way on S1E4 “Hearts and Minds.” While we think both ladies rocked it, we’re a little bit partial toward Mary in it.

Look three showcases that the shows costume designers manage to take care with the older characters as well as the younger, more eligible maidens. In episode 13 entitled “The Consummation” Marie de Guise wears an awesome look…Her eggplant jacket has amazing hardware on it and is accented by an Oscar de la Renta 24-karat Gold-Plated Crystal and Cabochon Necklace and World Market beaded headband. She looks regal and authoritative, as she is.
We had to cover a look from Aylee. In episode 7, “Left Behind”, we see Aylee in one of her signature lighter and more conservative dresses. The costumer on the show has been quoted saying, “For Aylee, she always felt probably the most conservative out of the girls, a little more reserved, a little more law-abiding so to speak. I always envisioned her as the prep, the preppy girl as she would be in modern times. So we kept her in a lot of creams. Ironically, old vintage wedding dresses really kind of started working for her, so we got this collection in and these beautiful kind of 1950s and ’60s wedding gowns that we then would kind of take apart and jewel or do something to do make them her own.” The sparkly dress in the above outfit is accented by another Untamed Petals belt.
Our final look is also from the 7th episode, “Left Behind” and was one of the most talked about looks of the season. Mary wore a high-necked dramatic red lace dress for the feast scene, and we think she killed it.
Earlier in the scene, she accented it with a Eugenia Kim headband. We like the look both ways.
