This week YA author Andrew Sharp took over our Twitter as a part of our weekly Thursday Twitter Takeover. Andrew Sharp is the author of The Guaridian of Magic. (See YEM’s interview of Andrew Sharp here.) See highlights from the takeover below.
Hi, welcome to the author share and takeover for The Guardian of Magic epic fantasy novel hosted by me the author Andrew Sharp. This is my first published novel The Guardian of Magic. It is self-published and I wish I had done this year’s early. #YAauthorTakeover pic.twitter.com/AN8M9sHlBP

Although I’ve been writing novels as a hobby now for over 3 decades it’s only when I held my first published book in my hand did I realize how much I truly love writing. #YAauthorTakeover

I normally create an outline story then develop the book’s world to fit the story. I started the world build first and then the story grew from that. My initial inspiration was a new mode of travel which was walking through mist banks guarded by predators. #YAauthorTakeover

I have always been drawn to science fiction and fantasy books and films as they are an escape from reality but with all the same nuances of reality hidden in the stories. #YAauthorTakeover
— Young Entertainment Magazine (@YoungEntmag) September 23, 2021
My first attempts at novels flowed from playing Dungeons and Dragons and so they were adventures with quests. #YAauthorTakeover
— Young Entertainment Magazine (@YoungEntmag) September 23, 2021
I was writing before PC, PlayStation and Xbox games and even created game worlds and rules for some of my earlier books much like Dungeons and Dragons rule books, but I developed my own rules to be different. #YAauthorTakeover

I do play Xbox now and focus on RPG, but I do not play often and log myself as offline to be invisible and so I play alone – #YAauthorTakeover
— Young Entertainment Magazine (@YoungEntmag) September 23, 2021
Occasionally I see inspiration for a new book idea while playing Xbox, but also see a lot of repetition and so know what not to write about. #YAauthorTakeover
— Young Entertainment Magazine (@YoungEntmag) September 23, 2021
I’ve set myself a goal now to write nine novels, consisting of three series of three books by the end of 2023 and to self-publish them all. #YAauthorTakeover
— Young Entertainment Magazine (@YoungEntmag) September 23, 2021
If I was to be offered a traditional publishing deal now, I’m unsure if I would take it as I like the fact it’s my efforts that get me over the line. I suppose the temptation would be for the greater marketing a traditional publisher can offer. #YAauthorTakeover
— Young Entertainment Magazine (@YoungEntmag) September 23, 2021
Marketing is not my strong point for my book and I’m still trying different methods but still with limited success. #YAauthorTakeover

I work full-time with a ‘real’ job, but I am planning to take a year or more out from next summer to just try and succeed at writing and painting. Success will be earning enough money to keep writing and painting. #YAauthorTakeover

I ask myself would I want to be a famous author and I’m unsure as I like my privacy. Yet, I have realized that if I am successful with my writing there will always be an element of notoriety so the choice will not be mine but that of my readers really. #YAauthorTakeover

The Guardian of Magic – In the second novel the stones become stained by a darker magic and the current magic starts to have unfortunate side effects. The third book sees the culmination of all the different magics coming together to decide dominance. #YAauthorTakeover

My writing advise – Write, keep writing – anyone got better advice? #YAauthorTakeover
— Young Entertainment Magazine (@YoungEntmag) September 23, 2021
Would you agree that the book cover is important? It's the first impression people see and are drawn to. No matter the quality of the words inside the cover you need to get the reader’s attention from the first glance. #YAauthorTakeover

I think you need to publish both and E-Book and a Print version of books today as a minimum format. Not sure about audio – anyone? #YAauthorTakeover

I paint too #YAauthorTakeover pic.twitter.com/4MyIwLKE0N

I am only publishing through Amazon KDP at present. I did look at other direct publishing to reach a wider audience and bookstores but the risk I found was that if a bookstore ordered 300 instead of 30 and returned the 270 I had to pay for the 270. #YAauthorTakeover

My advice for self-publishing is to vary your copyeditors and proofreaders a little as each pick up on a different perspective and enhances your learning experience. #YAauthorTakeover

Writing stories is a passion and even if you are not successful don’t give up if you love doing it or have you decided to give up already? #YAauthorTakeover
— Young Entertainment Magazine (@YoungEntmag) September 23, 2021
Everyone still needs a lucky break at times as hard work and effort are sometimes not enough. That doesn’t mean you should give up though. Chase your dreams because if you don’t, they can get away from you. #YAauthorTakeover

I must admit I write on electronic devices now – PC or tablet, not with pen and paper. I wonder if anyone one still writes novels with a pen or typewriter? pic.twitter.com/B3vN6NKmVG

I must admit I don't know how I manage to find time to write and self-publish while working full-time and then to paint and do photography on top – busy bee – but I need the art part of me. #YAauthorTakeover pic.twitter.com/DJuEDzIjvB
