Grant Beagan: The Finder’s Code is the story of a 16-year-old who discovers a parallel magical universe. Some things that make our book stand out: (1) strong world-building (2) a complex, cohesive magic system (3) a storyline that doesn’t focus on good vs evil. #YAauthorTakeover

Tom and I met in middle school, and we’ve been friends for 35 years. We decided to write a book together because we both love fantasy stories about magic. #YAauthorTakeover

How do we divide up the work? Tom is the architect of the world, societies, and magic system (collectively called LitCraft), and plays a huge role in plotting. I’m the writer, trying to bring the world and characters to life. #YAauthorTakeover

Will Grant Beagan be a series? Yes. The Finder’s Code is meant to be the beginning of something fun and unique. We have a total of seven books planned out, and we’re excited about the directions the storyline and characters will take. #YAauthorTakeover

Were there growing pains for me as a first-time YA writer? Definitely. I’ve written other books, but they are all meant for adult readers. Writing YA fantasy is uniquely challenging. #YAauthorTakeover

We genuinely value reader feedback. Because this is a planned series, we are adapting our approach on the fly based on what resonates and doesn’t. We don’t have all the answers. But we’re excited about the Grant Beagan universe and it’s potential. #YAauthorTakeover

What is Grant like? To start, he’s from a real place. His identity and his circumstances are true-to-life. He’s a real, everyday kid who’s being called upon to be braver than he should have to be, especially at his age. #YAauthorTakeover

Grant is also kind and compassionate, and I feel this will resonate. Young people today often manage to display a level of compassion and empathy and generosity that I find inspiring. I believe (and I hope) that Grant represents them well. #YAauthorTakeover

What is the universe like? The LitCraft Universe has evolved into a society of inclusion and accessibility where many barriers to participation are removed. The values of exploration and growth are understood. Everyone has a place in Lit society. #YAauthorTakeover

How does magic work in LitCraft? All creatures, including humans, have the ability to channel magic to some degree, though for most humans it is minuscule. Flames (specialized mages) search for those with stronger abilities who can join the world of the Lit. #YAauthorTakeover
