My first book, Girl in Pieces, took nine years to write! That seems like a long time, because it is! Life happens while you are writing…
…this is just to say: writing takes as long as it takes. Just keep working on the story that burns inside you. #yaauthortakeover

Q: what is the book that made you want to be a writer?
A: A WRINKLE IN TIME by Madeleine L'Engle. Something about Meg's loneliness spoke to me. The story captivated me. I thought, I would like to do that. Maybe I COULD do that.https://t.co/K1jTJcCPf4

Q: When did you first start writing?
A: I noodled around as a kid, stories and poems. I thought I would be a poet at first, because I read a poem by Gary Soto when I was teen that really…lived inside me. It's called Oranges.https://t.co/S84BfWTGUu#yaauthortakeover

Thank you for reading my books @MrJeffGiles!
A: YES. My books have weighty issues like depression, self-harm, addiction–things that have personal relevance to me, so they're emotionally hard to write, but also… hopeful, because in the end, perhaps they'll help someone. https://t.co/zJgCTTwKmn

Q: what is your writing process like?
A: I'm a pantser, not a plotter. This means that I often start a book with just a few ideas and…write until I hit 300 pages.I don't outline! I think this stems from my beginnings as a poet.#yaauthortakeover

Caveat: I HAVE outlined one book because it's a mystery & you have to do that for mysteries! It comes out next May! I wrote it with @LzLwsn. You can add THE AGATHAS to your Goodreads: https://t.co/3cLe6xsSZQ

Ooooh, my dream writing retreat! I love this question!
A: a dark & stormy castle somewhere on a dark & stormy coast w/ lots of wool sweaters & dogs & tea & ghosts & friends
OR
an adobe house in Taos w/ dogs, friends, ghosts, wool sweaters & tea #yaauthortakeover https://t.co/1MiQxbh0sK

YBHN is loosely inspired by the play OUR TOWN. It was an interesting process, being inspired by a great play, but as my drafts progressed, YBHN grew wings and became its own story.

One of the first craft books on writing that I found very very useful (and still do, btw) is Bird by Bird by @ANNELAMOTT. It's short, elegant, packed with beautiful prompts, and it's lovely.https://t.co/EM3A3NeAVl

An excellent question! Where do I get my ideas?
Walking! I find my mind is more open when I'm active & outside & clear from distractions. Kind of letting my brain decompress & breathe.
I need to pay attention while I drive because I'm easily distracted, like a small pet 😂 https://t.co/g347kjJmDq

Also, everyone! @JuliaClaiborneJ writes some of the funniest and most touching novels I've ever read and I highly recommend them: https://t.co/sURQKDPwPm

What is my favorite part of a book to write? I love this question!
It's the characters! I love watching them develop & grow! And yet…I love this so much I often forget about the plot!
Luckily, I have an editor to remind me about that 😂#yaauthortakeover https://t.co/rnQowfZF7Z

Q: how did you first become published?
A: I queried agents & found a wonderful one in @StevensonPfarr! She had notes & encouragement & understood GIRL IN PIECES.Finding an agent takes time! Don't give up 🙂 You'll find the person to champion your book.#yaauthortakeover

Q: what is your favorite quote from YOU'D BE HOME NOW?
A: "The thing about being invisible is, you'd think it would feel light and airy and easy, no pressure, but it doesn't…it's the heaviest thing I've ever known."#yaauthortakeover
— Young Entertainment Magazine (@YoungEntmag) October 14, 2021

Wait, I have one more DMed question!
Q: Who was your first favorite band?
A: The Doors! I read a book about them when I was 11 & immediately went to the music store in El Con Mall & bought their first album, snapped on my headphones & the rest is history!#yaauthortakeover— Young Entertainment Magazine (@YoungEntmag) October 14, 2021
