Seeking Sammy Out

YOUNG ADULT: When did you first realize you wanted to pursue a music career?
SAMMY ADAMS: I realized at a pretty young age because of how much I enjoyed playing the piano, drums, and other instruments. However, always thought I would become more of a producer than singer/rapper because I was always in the studio or working somewhere on beats and production rather than laying down vocals myself.

YA: Was your family supportive?
SA: The most. My family is the most understanding, loving family an artist could ask for. Thank you love you guys!

YA: What was it like working with the famous Enrique Iglesias?
SA: Haha really cool. I originally wrote it for myself, but after I heard he loved it, it was a no brainer (also after he put his own style and melodies on it I liked it better)! We had some time to just hang and talk about stuff that you don’t usually get to talk to famous a-listers about… Like what Scandinavia was going to be like for me when I tour there, and other fun stuff. He’s a really funny guy, watch out though leave your blackberry/iPhone around and he’ll prank the shit out of you.

YA: How did Enrique find you out?
SA: Mike Caren and I were working on some records together and it was a perfect collaboration for both of us. After E.I heard the song I did he wanted to cut vocals to it and make some changes! Very glad it worked out.

YA: What do you find most challenging about this career?
SA: Patience. Patience. Patience. If you want to be in it for the long hall and have a long career you have to get the music right, the look, and overall package as perfect as possible before you press go.
You can be as driven and strong willed and hardworking as any one in music, but sometimes the world works in weird ways. Some things work that you didn’t think would, others don’t work that you thought we’re sure shots. Learning to manage your expectations in the music world is super important. Best thing is to have honest managers that don’t bullshit or blow smoke up your ass, honesty is the best policy.

YA: Who or what has been your inspiration?
SA: Life! I went from a normal college kid to a touring act within months of graduating (Trinity College GIMME MY DIPLOMA!) traveling, meeting other artists and people, playing shows are all super inspirational for a young kid making music. Open up your eyes everyday there’s 100 things that happen or take place that you can turn into songs or lyrics.

YA: How did you manage to get the gig on 90210?
SA: Haha, my team! 90210 was interested and we made it happen.

YA: What was the experience on 90210 like?
SA: It was really cool. Seeing how much effort and planning/shots it takes to film a whe episode is CRAZY! Talk about patience I don’t know how TV/Film actors don’t go nuts. It’s a crazy amount of work!

YA: Who are some of your favorite bands?
SA: The XX, Rolling Stones, Depeche Mode, Kanye, Jay-Z, Jimi Hendrix.

YA: What are five of your favorite things about being on the road?
SA: 1. Playing a show every night in a place super different than the night before.
2. Sleeping on the tour bus! The generator purrs and putsch to sleep super fast.
3. Having my boys and team on the road with me, ie: best friends, brother, my team! (It’s amazing that we get to do this as our job, so cool).
4. Late night food stops ‘cus something hilarious always happens.
5. Writing on the bus / recording on the bus when your driving through weird places like the desert or a snowstorm, something about movement and constant change spurs crazy creativity.

YA: What do you have coming up?
SA: ALBUM! WOOP! Can’t wait to drop it and get back on your. Also have another single dropping soon which I am AMPED about.

YA: What’s your favorite book, or what book are you currently reading?
SA: My favorite book is probably Among the Thugs by Bill Buford. Although I’m reading Just Kids by Patti Smith and it’s SO good, read both.
