The 100

The 100We love adaptations over here at YA…and The 100 is no exception. The sci-fi show has been gripping from week to week and we can’t wait to see what happens! The show started off as a book….but it underwent a bit of an unusual development process.

Written by Kass Morgan, a former editor, The 100 is her first book. What’s interesting about her development process is that it was an idea developed by Alloy, a book publishing shingle with an active interest in producing TV. That means that the process unfolded with an eye toward TV adaptation. Kass has repeatedly stated the importance that the book be able to stand alone…and we think it does, however it’s very interesting that the two were developed in conjunction.

The main differences in the two are similar to the difference in other major adaptations. Descriptions of the world that last for pages in the book are taken down to a single tracking shot, for example. The two were developed independently of one another, so somethings are shifted slightly, such as the definitive POV storytelling in the books.

The 100 was renewed so thankfully we’ll get to see some more of how it all plays out on the TV show and compare the second season with the second book soon enough!
