The Stepsisters Tale

Original author: Tracy Barrett
The Stepsister's Tale

SYNOPSIS:
What really happened after the clock struck midnight?

Jane Montjoy is tired of being a lady. She’s tired of pretending to live up to the standards of her mother’s noble family-especially now that the family’s wealth is gone and their stately mansion has fallen to ruin. It’s hard enough that she must tend to the animals and find a way to feed her mother and her little sister each day. Jane’s burden only gets worse after her mother returns from a trip to town with a new stepfather and stepsister in tow. Despite the family’s struggle to prepare for the long winter ahead, Jane’s stepfather remains determined to give his beautiful but spoiled child her every desire.

When her stepfather suddenly dies, leaving nothing but debts and a bereaved daughter behind, it seems to Jane that her family is destined for eternal unhappiness. But a mysterious boy from the woods and an invitation to a royal ball are certain to change her fate…

From the handsome prince to the evil stepsister, nothing is quite as it seems in Tracy Barrett’s stunning retelling of the classic Cinderella tale.

WHY SHOULD YOU CHECK IT OUT?
We are loving all of the classic story retellings hitting YA in the past years. But even more than modern than straight-up adaptations, who can resist the told-from-the-villain perspective? Like Wicked did for the Witch of the West, here we have the Cinderella narrative as seen from the perspective of her possibly-not-so-wicked stepsisters.

On the cover, one of the sisters takes center stage—as it should be. Presumably her stepsister, Ella, is the one she’s leaning on and glaring at. While the play of dark and light through the clothes, hair, and eyes of the two girls is a nice touch, it’s also an expected one.

Author Tracy Barrett has been down the path of reimaginings before (KING OF ITHIKA, DARK OF THE MOON) but this is her first venture into fairy tales. She’s a prolific writer; if you haven’t read any of her other work, it’s a good time to start!

EARLY REVIEWS SAY…
[Barrett] includes the major elements of the fairy tale but gives them realistic rather than magical origins… Highly imaginative as well as insightful, this outstanding revision has the power to entrance and provoke… (Kirkus Review)

Barrett cleverly upends traditional notions of happily ever after—rather than Cinderella’s usual trajectory of rising from the ashes to marry a prince, for Jane, Maude, and their family, salvation comes through hard work, realizing the futility of clinging to a long-dead illusion of nobility, and embracing a “lowered” station in life that truly allows them to live.
