Two veteran coaches Blake and Adam kick off the show singing The Beatles “Come Together” with two new coaches: Shakira and Usher!
First up is the Morgan Twins (they really are twins) singing “Fallin.” Was one sister better than the other? Either way they’re on team Blake. Twenty-one-year-old, hairdresser Jess Kellner discusses how she used music to express herself and deal with an alcoholic mother before singing “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” She joins team Usher. Next up is Minnesota roofer Mark Andrew who tells us about the tragic death of a band mate before diving into “Knocking on Heaven’s Door.” Shakira is passionate about him, and he joins her team. Good, but not great singer, Janetza Mirand sings “Titanium,” but receives no turns, but snags a hug from Adam.
A three chair-turn follows. It’s Danielle Bradbery singing a ballad version of Taylor Swift’s “Mean.” You guessed it; she joins team Blake. Nineteen-year-old Vedo gives us a rhythmic twist of “Boyfriend” before joining team Usher. Seriously, why is Usher sitting like that? Next Chris Porter’s cheeky version of “Sexy and I Know It” garners him a three chair turn. He goes for veteran coach Blake. We recap some eliminated contests, and then move on to former Chinese orphan, Leah Lewis. She doesn’t turn a single chair, but gets a lot of praise for her potential at just fifteen-years-old.
Kris Thomas shocks the male judges with his rendition of “Saving All My Love for You.” They had no clue it was a guy singing, which is maybe why he joins team Shakira. Next up is James Irwin, who lost his twin girls while his wife was still pregnant. His version of “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved” was good, but not good enough for the judges to turn. And last, but not least of the debut episode is a former back up singer for Michael Jackson, Judith Hill. Judith’s “What a Girl Wants” wows the judges with Adam standing on his chair to woo her over to his team. This girl is a definite contender, and joins team Adam.
We start the next episode with Nashville artist, Tawyna Reynolds singing “Mama Don’t Let Your Babies Grow up to be Cowboys.” The thirty-three-year-old gets four chair turns, and surprises everyone by joining Shakira’s team. Up next is pretty boy/choir boy, Josiah Hawley singing Adam’s “Sunday Morning,” yet he ends up going with Usher.
Idaho duo Midas Whale bring some folky-pop with their take on “Folsom Prison Blues, and receive three chair turns. They wow the audience and judges by speaking fluent Spanish with Shakira, but end up going over to team Adam. We have another good, but not great contestant, then move on to Bronx teen Cathia, who is so proud of her Latin heritage she sings “No Me Doy Por Vencido.” Three judges turn, and surprise, surprise she goes with Shakira. Adam closes the show by stealing major contender Sarah Simmons singing “One of Us” from the other four judges.
April’s scoop: Blind auditions complete. A Shakira song brings big energy and a country star wows.
