The Walking Dead, S04E09 – “After”

The wait is over. Season 4 episode 9 of The Walking Dead is the second half of the season and it’s finally here. We start right where we left off. The Prison is destroyed. Walkers stumble around everywhere multiplying the chaos. Now that the stronghold is gone, things are bleaker than ever. Rick is in pretty bad shape and asks Carl to slow down on their ceaseless march. Carl is really maturing now, and he refuses. Rick and Carl approach Joe’s BBQ Shack to raid for supplies. When they go inside, they find that Joe’s so has abandoned him. Rick and Carl are basically looking at a mirror image of themselves, and what could happen if Carl were to become more self-serving. Rick and Carl continue to battle it out, in a way. It’s mostly a demonstration of Carl’s increasing independence and capabilities, which is a normal developmental thing even in extraordinary circumstances. Rick and Carl find a house and they decide to settle in for the night. Lucky for Carl, one of the bedrooms is totally decked out – teenage haven / heaven. Unlucky for Carl, the house has no way for him to utilize the sick gaming system since the grid is down. Carl’s passive aggressive behavior is stopping him from seeing how bad Rick really is (major injuries, near-death bad). They go to bed and the next morning, Carl is unable to wake Rick, since he’s in a sort of injury-induced coma. Carl tries to get help but is unable to so he heads out by himself. After some near misses Carl returns home triumphant. His triumph is cut short by the fact that Rick still hasn’t woken up. Carl becomes scared and realizes that Rick isn’t a super-human he’s just a human. It’s unclear whether Rick is in a coma or dead. After a long hard day, Carl goes up onto the roof scared and alone. He hears Rick wheezing and Carl is unsure whether it’s a zombie wheeze or an injury wheeze. It turns out to be injury-based and Carl cries of relief. Later, Rick wakes up and the two reconcile. Michonne reunites with them and there are happy tears all around. Did you understand Carl’s plight? Do you think he could make it on his own? Tweet us @YAmzine to join the conversation!
