PREMATURE
Summed up as: The horny teenage version of Groundhog Day.
Weirdest thing in the trailer: How everyone in the cast sort of looks like someone (is the love interest Madeline Zima from The Nanny? Is the lead Topher Grace’s younger brother?), but isn’t.
Most shocking? The wet spots on Rob’s package and the use of profanity. A little much for a high school movie trailer!
Worth seeing it opening weekend? Just VOD Groundhog’s Day!
GOTHAM
That’s right folks, we do TV trailers too!
Summed up as: The origin story for Commissioner Jim Gordon, and by extension Bruce Wayne, Catwoman, Penguin and lots of other denizens of the infamous city.
Coolest thing in the trailer: Definitely the meeting of Gordon and a frightened young little boy who just witnessed his parents’ murder. I.e., The Dark Knight himself as a young boy.
Biggest fear? That this is just a glorified but ultimately unimaginative procedural, or that it makes the same mistakes as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Watch it or DVR it? This is a definite watch on premiere night!
MALEFICENT (international Trailer)
Summed up as: Sleeping Beauty getting the Wicked treatment.
Weirdest thing in the trailer: Is it terrible to say that the more we see of this movie, the less interesting it looks? The live-action version of the three-colored fairies are so literal and flat, it gives us great pause about the piece as a whole…
Most exciting? Always good to get more of Elle Fanning. We also love Lana Del Ray’s version of “Once Upon a Dream”!
Worth seeing it opening weekend? This is Disney, who have a great track record, so yes.
DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
Summed up as: The sequel to the reboot (sadly, this isn’t unheard of at all anymore)
Coolest thing in the trailer: To its credit, the cool thing about this new version is the original way the plague was set up in the first film, and how the aftermath seems to play out here.
Most predictable thing: Of course, people are the villains here. But Gary Oldman makes a damn good one!
Worth seeing it opening weekend? If you liked the first one…
22 JUMP STREET (international Trailer)
Summed up as: Those boys are up to their old tricks again! Which boys? Which old tricks? Exactly. But it’s Jonah Hill being funny and Channing Tatum trying to be. And they’re ‘taking it to the next level’ – going to college.
Funniest thing in the trailer: The ‘uncomfortable fistfight’ between Hill and an unnamed stocky female opponent.
Worth seeing it opening weekend? As far as sequels go, we’re gonna say no.
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
Summed up as: A full-on screen adaptation of the classic children’s book.
Funniest thing in the trailer: For a Steve Carell movie, the laughs seem pretty minor, even if there is gag upon gag upon gag here. We think this is ultimately going to be a sensitive family film
Most exciting? Definitely Jennifer Coolidge as the driving instructor! Oh and Bella Thorne as the girlfriend.
Worth seeing it opening weekend? Just VOD Groundhog’s Day? But Steve C. could really use a hit, so if you like him go see this…
