Tribeca is a festival famous for uncovering amazing new projects, finding hidden gems and introducing us to fierce new talent. As we head into yet another festival, these are only a minor selection of the fresh faces to look out for.
Jack O’Connell – This actor is the one to watch at this year’s fest. Set to appear in Angelina Jolie’s highly anticipated directorial debut Unbroken, O’Connell is at the center of festival entry Starred Up, playing a destructive, violent and troubled young man in an unforgiving prison system. The power of his performance alone carries the film.
Emory Cohen – As Leo Houston on TV’s now defunct Smash, Cohen already turned heads, and he sealed the deal of his popularity in The Place Beyond the Pines. Now, the young actor takes a starring role in Beneath The Harvest Sky, as one half of a pair of friends who get into big trouble despite the best of intentions.
Danielle Macdonald – Starring opposite Dakota Fanning in Every Secret Thing, Australian actress Danielle Macdonald is a star on the rise. After a featured role in last year’s searing The East, Danielle holds her own opposite dramatic powerhouse Fanning, as they play two young girls sent to prison for abducting a baby.
Saga Becker – In Swedish fest entry Something Must Break, Saga Becker portrays Sebastian, an androgynous young man with a ‘superwoman growing inside of him’, who falls in love with a straight-identifying boy named Andreas. This ‘transgressive’ love story seems like it’s one for the ages, and we can wait to see Becker’s performance.
Rory Culkin, Emma Roberts & Dakota Fanning – OK, so these guys aren’t really ‘fresh’ faces, having each proven themselves as thoroughly talented younger actors already. But they all are at the precipice of becoming full-fledged adults now, and their performances in a slew of Tribeca entries this year already have people talking. Look for the talented Rory in Gabriel, playing an unhinged and obsessive ex-boyfriend. You will be able to find Dakota in two films, Every Secret Thing and Night Moves, while Emma shines in Palo Alto.
