“Scotland” by The Lumineers [Wesley Jeremiah] featured on Reign, all episodes
Reign is taking the YA world by storm. Not only is the series irresistibly watchable, but the music is second to none right now. Fans eagerly await episodes not only to see what will unfold for Mary, Catherine, Francis, Henry and more, but also to see what tunes are incorporated each week. It makes sense that a band like The Lumineers — masters of the delicate yet anthemic balance — were tapped for the theme song, written especially for the show. It captures the tense dynamics perfectly…including the most tense situations of all, those of the heart. Listen to the theme song here.
“Final Days” by Matt Wilcox featured on Reign episode 1.2 “Snakes in the Garden”
This song has both an ominous yet hopeful tone. In “Snakes in the Garden,” Madeline comes to court to become Charles’ betrothed and strengthen the alliance between France and Scotland. When this song plays, everyone is out in the courtyard watching the two children (ages 6 and 7 respectively) get acquainted and play…but the lyrics belie some tension yet to unfold.
“Wasting My Young Years” by London Grammar featured on Reign episode 1.3 “Kissed”
Tensions are high at this point in Reign. The English are crowding the Scottish border waiting to strike and the royals are feeling pains of the waiting game. Tomas starts to play a bigger role…and quickly catches Mary’s eye. Mary and Tomas go on a horseback ride to visit a church built by Louis VII and start to have intimate conversation. London Grammar’s haunting tune “Wasting My Young Years” is particularly fitting as this is the struggle Mary faces every day — being dutiful to her country while trying to balance the needs of her own maturing heart. Listen to the evocative song above.
“Don’t You Give Up On Me” by Milo Green featured on Reign episode 1.5 “A Chill In The Air”
Mary and Francis’s relationship is at a point of contention. Some viewers love them togehter (what’s not to love about Francis’s especially dreamy eyes and hair…honestly??) and some feel that Mary’s better suited to another. Milo Green’s beautiful song “Don’t You Give Up On Me” perfectly captures that back and forth pull between them without being overly-saccharine. Swoon. Check it out.
“The Call” by Ruu Campbell featured on Reign episode 1.5 “A Chill In The Air”
“A Chill in the Air” was a particularly dynamic episode for Reign. Lots of kissing all around, and also the heart-wrenching breakup between Greer and Leith went down toward the end of the episode. That was juxtaposed with a kiss between Olivia and Francis! Both were set to “The Call” by Ruu Campbell. The song dealt with themes about emotions bigger than ourselves, and it was spot on.
“All You Leave Behind” by Hannah Cartwright & Ross Tones featured on Reign episode 1.6 “Chosen”
Reign is killing it with the music and the promos are no different. For the most recently aired episode, “Chosen,” the eerie tune “All You Leave Behind” by Hannah Cartwright & Ross Tones was featured. It melded perfectly with the show’s themes of betrayal, mistrust and suspense. Check it out!
