Hello Everyone! My name is Jessi Sheron (aka @jessisheron) and I'm your host with the most for the next hour! Today I'm talking about my mermaid YA graphic novel "The Sea in You!" @ironcircuscomix #YAauthorTakeover pic.twitter.com/FZlr8Zyb0I

The Sea in you is my first published graphic novel, but it started out as a webcomic! I'm a little obsessed with webcomics #YAauthorTakeover pic.twitter.com/pnqAnUzFwH

I've drawn a couple webcomics now, I first started in highschool when I drew them by hand for fun. The first time I knew I wanted to be an author and artist though was when i was 13 #YAauthorTakeover

When I was 13 I saw a girl reading a manga, Sailor Moon, I stood up and asked "WHAT IS THAT? They make comics for girls?" and she said "Yeah and a girl made it too!" I said "THAT'S A JOB? CAN IT BE MY JOB?"— Young Entertainment Magazine (@YoungEntmag) June 9, 2022
I've drawn non-stop since I was a kid until now. I went to school in New York city for 2 years at the Fashion Institute of technology and studied illustration but also fashion illustration, this ended up influencing my comics! #YAauthortakeover pic.twitter.com/gx1F8VxWVQ

The Sea in You draws (oh a pun!) a lot of inspiration from mermaid stories like Hans Christian Anderson's and also a story called Undine. pic.twitter.com/RS3A4xZ7Dd— Young Entertainment Magazine (@YoungEntmag) June 9, 2022

Before drawing and writing "The Sea in You", my first work in the arts industry was creating art for toys! Especially dolls. I was an "asset illustrator" meaning i made art according to request which would be used on things like balloons, cups, clothes etc!— Young Entertainment Magazine (@YoungEntmag) June 9, 2022
#YAauthorTakeover I first learned to draw traditionally, which still influences my style, for a long time my favorite way to draw was with a brush and ink. DIFFICULT! Now I work digitally, but what I learned still applies, here's a panel of "The Sea in You" coming together pic.twitter.com/VRUVWRAhLN

My mermaid design was something I thought a lot about. Her design is influenced by a lot of different things, like the fish blue marlins. their color patterning is actually a kind of camouflage! #YAauthortakeover pic.twitter.com/fMAXQPzSYt

#YAauthortakeover Mermaids are creatures of our dreams and nightmares. For me a POWER fantasy. As much as I love beautiful gentle mermaids, I also enjoy
how tangled their legends are in danger. I also deeply love the sea, so a personification of the sea really speaks to me. https://t.co/dOBltVM0z6— Young Entertainment Magazine (@YoungEntmag) June 9, 2022
#YAauthortakeover so what's the story of "The Sea in You"? in short! 15-year-old Corinth was just trying to clean up the beach; she never expected to meet a mermaid, let alone be nearly drowned by one. It was the start of a very strange friendship. pic.twitter.com/ldkfRUEBG9

One of the things that is unique with my mermaid comic is american sign language plays a big part in the story! #YAauthortakeover
Corinth the human girl and Skylla both use it to communicate. Communication is a big theme to me in art and in life. pic.twitter.com/ur6Gepo14I

My favorite thing to write and draw in "The Sea in You" is the interaction between Corinth and Skylla, every time I draw them I get the biggest smile. I always remember how real characters were in the books I read growing up. I wanted them to feel "real" too. pic.twitter.com/LD8rFCZQJv— Young Entertainment Magazine (@YoungEntmag) June 9, 2022
#YAauthortakeover Here's another video of a page I made for the comic (sped up of course!) Here you can see a little bit of my personal process for making a comic page visually. 1. Sketch 2. "ink" (on a computer this means clean art) 3. color. 4. details shade/light/effects pic.twitter.com/7G08t38nxD

2. Post consistently (if you can). You don't have to post CONSTANTLY but if you post art every thursday? People will know to show up on thursday! This is a great way to build an audience.— Young Entertainment Magazine (@YoungEntmag) June 9, 2022

Here's my biggest tip and trick
the big secret!
Make the book you would be EXCITED to see on a shelf. That fueled every panel of "The Sea in You". I was making work I wanted to see in the world, the audience FEELS that excitement. and often will return it!— Young Entertainment Magazine (@YoungEntmag) June 9, 2022
#YAauthortakeover
I really appreciate that. It's something a lot of people go through, I wanted to show it from the inside, so the audience would understand how it feels. I also hope, maybe if someone IS going through it, they'd see they deserve better too. https://t.co/mMegnmG2UZ— Young Entertainment Magazine (@YoungEntmag) June 9, 2022
