The Vampire Diaries stretches both the talents of the actors and the minds of viewers. How? The show constantly utilizes doppelgangers – an important part of the mythology of Mystic Falls. The interesting thing for the actors is the chance to play two, three, four or more iterations of the same character. It also opens up a world of possibility in how the relationships between characters can unfold. We decided to play a what if game with Stefan and talk about all his different iterations and how Elena (who has several doppelgangers herself) would be with each of them.
Human Stefan
As a human, Stefan was pretty much amazing – he was honorable, athletic, responsible, intelligent, family-oriented and more. The entire town of Mystic Falls loved him and he was a doctor who valued healing above all else. He was ambitious and loving and very close to his family. We think that Elena would have loved him, much as Katherine did back then, also.
Vegetarian Vampire Stefan / Ripper Stefan
Right after Stefan turned, he tried to be a vegetarian vampire for a while, which still showcased his idealistic nature. Stefan was very focused on his emotional state at this time in his transition and not very outwardly focused on romance. After he got the taste for human blood, he became a violent killer. While we think Elena would have still liked him at this time, we’re not into this for her as he was more inwardly focused as opposed to relationship minded.
Early 20th century Stefan
After a time of separation, Stefan and Damon reconnected in the 20s. This version of Stefan was a little more cynical and grounded. We think he was suave, risk-taking and extremely handsome, if not totally in control of himself yet. We see this match up with Elena being hot and heavy but not ultimately sustainable.
Traditional Stefan
This is Stefan as we know him for the early seasons of the show. This time was marked with Stefan’s concern for others, especially with helping Damon get back in touch with his humanity. Stefan is more comfortable in his role here and of course Elena was attracted to him here, as this was the time in which they embarked on an intense relationship.
Silas
Silas has some serious confidence and swagger due to his new powers. He’s funnier than the traditional Stefan and he’s a little bit evil. He’s hotter than ever and he’s a little bit less of a messy eater than previous iterations of Stefan. He’s the bad boy we love to hate…but also kind of love. While Silas isn’t the guy to take home to mom, we could see a relationship with Elena being groundbreaking.
Amnesia Stefan
Amnesia-Stefan is also a neater eater, which we love. More than anything he’s far more playful than ever before. He’s flirtatious and utterly swoon-worthy and we think this could be the best version of Stefan yet. This is our favorite version of their relationship and we’re excited to see it unfold.
