Fans of the iconic TV show The O.C. are finally able to delve into how the series made it onto the air, thanks to a new behind-the-scenes tell-all book, Welcome to the O.C.: The Oral History. Written by Alan Sepinwall in collaboration with the show’s creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the book provides an in-depth look into what went into creating the show via new interviews with all the major cast and crew members. In our exclusive conversation with Alan, we talked about his writing process, favorite moments from the show and much more.
The O.C. originally premiered in 2003 and ran for four seasons, giving actors like Adam Brody, Ben McKenzie, Rachel Bilson and Mischa Barton their start. The show follows Ryan Atwood, played by McKenzie, as a troubled youth caught up in the lives of people in the wealthy, upper- class neighborhood of Newport Beach, California. The O.C. was one of the most popular teenage dramas of its time, paving the way for a new generation of shows to follow.
“People were very open about the highs and the lows of the experience of making the show for four years.”
Alan is the Rolling Stone’s chief TV critic and said that the impetus for this project was him being a big fan of the show and wanting to get back into writing books. He said working with the show’s creator Josh and executive producer Stephanie on writing an oral history was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. Alan also told us that by speaking with key cast members, writers and producers his goal was to highlight the highs and lows of the show in front of and behind the camera. He confirmed that everyone he talked to was very open and hopes the book puts to rest many of the rumors about the show and its cast. He believes his book isn’t just for fans of the show but for anyone who is interested in how a TV series gets made.
“Part of what was fun about The O.C. was … it was melodramatic, and it was funny and it was self aware and it was doing all of these things at once.”
We wrapped up the interview with some fan questions and Alan said his favorite Chrismukkah episode was the first one while some of his favorite songs from the show included “Hide and Seek” by Imogen Heap and the show’s theme song “California” from Phantom Planet.
“The show informed so much of my musical taste at the time, and it still kind of does. The music is such an important part of the show.”
