Awkward has built a surprisingly nuanced stable of interpersonal dynamics, ones that exceed far beyond some of the other shows on the air that deal with this age group. And true to it’s title, these connections can get, well, Awkward at times. The easiest way to check back in on our crew is to go relationship by relationship through the premiere – here’s hoping this catches you back up to speed:
Jenna and Matty
While like, everyone, was cruising Europe on a summer school trip, Jenna and Matty were all about each other. Physically. Now that they’re juniors, things have gotten a little hot and heavy and for now, that’s awesome…until….
Tamara and Jake
Normally, Tamara can’t exist without DTR’ing everything to within an inch of it’s life, but Tamara and Jake have just spent the summer abroad and the chic attitude must have rubbed off on her and their matching haircuts. It’s like we don’t even recognize you anymore. These two are glued at the hips, and lips and who knows what else.
Jenna and Tamara
Girls, girls, girls, obsessed with…boys! Have these two BFF’s lost their FF? Jenna seems to be feeling that way inclined but at least she still has —
Val
To talk to? Actually, it doesn’t seem so. Val and Tamara have bonded like, maje, over the trip and it seems that everyone is ditching Jenna for her former bestie. At least Jenna still has her one true outlet, creative writing. Which brings us to —
The Blog
It’s set back to private though so don’t freak. So now it’s more like a live journal, but still a constructive outlet for Jenna to vent her feelings of…feeling left out. Will Jenna have to turn to SADIE?
Sadie Saxton
Rumors start to spread that Sadie is pregnant with Ricky’s baby. She was eating A LOT of pickles and dressed like, well, a pregnant high-schooler. Once the rumors get back to her, Sadie is forced to admit her situation is due to her family’s new, less than stellar financial situation. Sadie basically spits venom in Jenna’s face when she tries to warm up to her (per usual) so maybe Jenna can talk to her mom about everything?
Jenna and Her Mom
We find out that Jenna’s family is more stable than ever, which is a good thing because maybe it’s not Sadie whose prego but really…Jenna?! In one of the more heartwarming moments of the series, Jenna and her mom have a supportive, serious, caring and loving conversation about the appropriate plan of action in a pregnancy scare. Which all kind of turns out to be null and void since Jenna isn’t actually pregnant but you know, her mom was there for her. Maybe it’s these types of heart-to-hearts that will pull Jenna back from Matty’s mouth long enough to help her realize that she has a lot going on outside of those pillowy lips. Or not. But one can hope.
