Geek Life With The Oxymorrons

Oxymorron’s are one part Queens, one part #geeklife (their self-proclaimed hashtag) and altogether original. They’re a band that really knows about keeping it in the family – two of the members are brothers – and have a uniquely positive outlook on their music and life in general. YA Mag was able to chat with the guys and talk about past careers, thumb wars, vlogging and much much more!

Young Adult: How did you come up with the name Oxymorrons?

Oxymorrons: We were sitting down analyzing our music and noticed how we mix so many different genres together that usually wouldn’t be used together. It was an oxymoron. So, we called ourselves Oxymorrons.

YA: When did you first realize music is what you wanted to do? Was this a first choice career?

Ox: Music was always a major part of our lives. Early on, Deee’s focus was on athletics and a career in criminal justice.  I (K.I.) was focused on acting. Clearly you can see what career won the battle! I think we made good choices.

YA: What message are you trying to share with your music?

Ox: The message that we are trying to push out with our music is to be yourself. If you love then love. If you get angry sometimes, it’s ok.  Be angry. It is ok to express yourself, you are human. With our music we try to express ourselves in each and every song.

YA: How would you describe your sound?

Ox: I would say our music is a melting pot of different sounds. We like to give you a little bit of this and a little bit of that.  Our sound and creative process really opens up the playing field for anything to happen. You never know what the Oxy’s might give you on any given track.

YA: Who would you like to work with in the future?

Ox: In the future we would like to work with anyone that is talented and has the love for music. No matter if the person is big or small, we like to create great music.

YA: What are 5 fun facts from the road?

Ox: (1) Every show we eat at least 2 to 3 large size packages of gummy bears.

(2) K.I. is thumb war champion. He would challenge people every show and win.

(3) We learned a major lesson; make sure you sleep and have energy for the next show. Matt Bro (Gym Class Heroes Security) pulled a prank on Deee as he was passed out on the dressing room floor screaming, “rookie move!”

(4) It doesn’t look like Travie McCoy will be a #1 NBA draft pick any time soon.  On tour, Deee and Travie played a game of one on one in their socks. It was too funny!

(5) We like to sing 80’s top hits really loud while we are in our dressing rooms.

YA: What’s your favorite part of playing live?

Ox: My favorite part of playing live is seeing the reactions of the people in the crowd. You can’t see their reactions when they are at home. It is awesome to see them have a great time with the music you created.

YA: How do you mentally prepare before a show? And how do you unwind after?

Ox: Ten minutes before we get on stage, we pray and then I (K.I.) zone out. I clear my mind and get myself pumped up as if I was going out for battle. After the show, we usually just relax, have a few drinks, joke around and get back in to normal mode.

YA: What projects do you have coming up?

Ox: We are going to be hitting the road, releasing more music videos, video vlogs and a lot more new music!

YA: What other pursuits do you have outside of music?

Ox: Can’t say just yet but there are big things to come in the future!

YA: What can you tell others pursuing the same career?

Ox: Focus hard on your craft and learn how to weather the storm. It’s not going to be an easy road but each goal you meet tastes so sweet!

YA: What 5 bands or songs are you currently listening to on your iPod?

Ox: Imagine Dragons, Kendrick Lamar, Passion Pit, Matt & Kim, and KiD CuDi ft. King Chip – Just What I Am.
