Skye, a good girl after all? SHIELD has spent the last five episodes crafting the mystery around her but has it all come crashing down? This past episode, Coulson, totally fed up, finally forced Skye show her hand. As it turns out, Skye’s secret doesn’t really have to be one at all: an orphan simply trying to find out any information about her lost family.
Skye has had no luck on this quest, basically hitting dead end after dead end for decades. In fact, the only thing her searching had turned up was one document. Where is this document? Well in the protection of SHIELD, obviously. This is the entire reason she was trying to infiltrate THE WHOLE TIME. Reluctantly, Coulson agrees to help Skye find out more information about her family. He’s not too happy about all her secrecy. SHIELD set up her motive to be one of personal gain previously in demonstrating through a long soliloquy that Skye feels information should be free to all.
Skye was also reunited with Miles in this past episode. As a refresher, Miles was her Rising Tide mentor and part-time lover. SHIELD obviously found out about this and gave Coulson another reason to look down upon Skye. This ultimately allowed Coulson to force Skye’s hand in revealing her true motives and proving where her loyalties really were aligned.
More importantly than Skye’s reveal was the return of…Centipede. Centipede hasn’t been brought up since the pilot episode. In the interim, the organization found a way around the Extremis combustion problem. How? By finding a SUPERHUMAN draining his blood and leaving him to die. Who is this superhuman that can stop Extremis combustion? A man named Chan Ho Yin – he has the ability to control fire, but only on a small scale. He wanted to increase his power and thought he would be able to do so by linking up with Centipede, led by a new villain, the evil Raina. Instead, Raina kidnapped and drugged him. Chan or as he is now known, Scorch, was not happy with Centipede, nor was he happy when SHIELD showed up on the scene trying to save him. Unfortunately, not even Coulson couldn’t save Chan from himself. Scorch went on a homicidal rampage and ultimately combusted as a result. Raina managed to get away at the last second…clearly devising more trouble for Centipede.
The episode ends with Raina, meeting with an imprisioned man. We don’t know who he is or how he’s connected but we know she needs his help to enter Centipede into Phase Two and ultimately with the help of a clairvoyant, Phase Three. Stay tuned to find out more about Centipede, Raina, Coulson and the rest of SHIELD. Agents of SHIELD airs Monday nights on ABC. Check local listings for times.
