You may already recognize Anthony Gargiula and Jonathan Tilkin from their iconic“Kitchen Singing” social media series and their collaborations with some of the biggest names in the music industry. Now they are unpacking those viral moments in their Counter-Melodies podcast. We Facetimed with Anthony and Jonathan to learn more about their journeys and their favorite BTS moments from the podcast!
Anthony has been singing for most of his life, and even performed on The Ellen Degeneres show when he was just seven years old. He has opened for artists including the Jonas Brothers and The Temptations.
Jonathan burst onto the scene with his pop covers, and has released many singles of his own including “Daydreamin” and “Something to Hold on to”.
Anthony and Jonathan go all the way back to 2019 where they first met in a Snapchat singing group. They then went on to both went on to become founding members of the a capella group “EARCANDY”, releasing their debut album “An EARCANDY Christmas” with Republic Records in 2020. The duo has collaborated with some of the biggest names, including Tori Kelly, Teddy Swims, Rachel Platten and more.
Anthony: “The kitchen [videos] slowly evolved and we are so grateful.”
Jonathan even worked with Ariana Grande when he was eight, which he said set the tone early on in his career by witnessing and working with someone as incredible as Ariana. He has also worked with many voice teachers to also develop his sound.
Jonathan: “I credit that time period for setting that bar really really high and it’s been so cool to follow [Ariana Grande’s] career over the years.”
Anthony also had a memorable start to his singing journey, as he revealed a nun told his family he had perfect pitch while he was singing in church!
After their viral kitchen videos took off, Anthony and Jonathan started their Counter-Melodies Podcast to invite fans to join them for candid conversations with special guests. Anthony said he loves to learn about musicians’ backstories, behind-the-scenes stories and their journeys.
Jonathan: “With those conversations, we were like it’d be cool if they were on camera.”
The duo also spilled some behind-the-scenes tea about some of their favorite moments and guests on the “Kitchen Singing” series. Anthony said they once filmed with Daniella Monet, AKA Trina from Victorious, and she performed in character, singing off key just like Trina. Jonathan also revealed they once went to film at Nicole Scherzinger’s house!
Anthony and Jonathan have worked so hard throughout their careers and never expected that singing in the kitchen would give them all these opportunities. It just goes to show the music and social media industry is ever changing. Jonathan says it’s important to learn how to put yourself out there and advocate for yourself. And as Anthony has learned, always say yes early on, you never know where it might lead you!
