Well readers, the Divergent trilogy has finally come to a close with the publication of Allegiant, the third volume by Veronica Roth. While we can’t wait for the film (slated for March 2014), below is a brief recap of the most attention-getting highlights from the third book (MAJOR SPOILER ALERTS):
In chapter 6 Tobias eavesdrops on one of his mother Evelyn’s conversations and realizes that “something is brewing”. Soon there are gunshots, and Edward, with his single eye, dies in the crossfire.
At the end of Chapter 9 before Tobias rescues Tris’s brother, they have an intimate moment, putting us all on the edge of our seats.
In chapter 10 Tobias saves Tris’s brother, Caleb. However the scene we love is when the two bicker about how Four will kill him, even though he has no intention of doing so.
When reaching the city gates in the middle of Chapter 11, it is Tori who is caught in some sort of crossfire and ends up dying in Tris’s embrace.
In chapter 13 we meet Zoe and Amar. Amar as it turns out was Tobias’s Dauntless instructor who was supposedly dead. (Our ideal casting picks: Julia Stiles, Tom Welling)
Then in Chapter 14 we meet David, the leader of the Bureau. (Bradley Cooper would be perfect)
We learn in chapter 16 about George Wu (John Cho perhaps?), Tori’s brother assumed dead who as it turns out is alive as well. This is only hours after Tori dies.
Chapter 17 introduces us to Matthew (Max Thieriot in our minds), the computer geek at the Bureau who helps Tris adjust to her new surroundings.
In Chapter 18, lab technician Juanita or Nita (Nina Dobrev?) administers a genetic test to Tobias and Tris.
Chapter 19 seems like a free fall, a stopping-off point in the book to get readers thinking about the past and looking forward to the future with the crew. A standout moment has Tobias going up in a plane and seeing how small the world is.
Chapter 20 and 23 sees Tobias meeting up with Nita behind Tris’s back to get a lesson in what the Bureau is all about. As it turns out, the Bureau is no different than the Factions. Nita doesn’t want Tris to know about any of this, but Tobias’s conscience is more than what she thought and Tris is involved in all future plans.
We meet Rafi and Mary (John Gallagher Jr., Jennifer Morrison), leaders of the Midwest Branch of the GD—Genetically Damaged—rebel group in the Fringe, which is considered to look a lot like the Factionless group within the Factions.
Nita’s plan fails in chapter 28 when she gets shot by Tris and then caught by the Bureau, while Uriah is caught in the crossfire. Then in Chapter 29 we see that Tobias was in on the action and arrested for his act.
In Chapter 35 Tobias watches the Factions he left behind on the cameras in the Bureau’s headquarters and watches his mother, Evelyn, and his father, Marcus, working on two different sides as the factions start to rebel against each other, ruining the Bureau’s experiment. The Bureau decides to erase all of the Factions’ memory.
Chapters 40-41 has Tris coming up with a plan to save the Factions without having to kill anyone in the Bureau, and when the time comes for one of them to sacrifice themselves, Caleb steps up, hoping that it will relieve him of his guilt.
In Chapter 48, Tobias finally has the heart to heart he’s always wanted with his mom.
Chapters 49-50: When Tris realizes she might be able to survive death, she goes in Caleb’s place and risks her own life. Her body is able to handle the poison, but instead death comes in the form of a gun and her death has us all in tears.
In Chapter 51, after Tobias has his chat with his mom, he goes out and gives Peter the truth serum. Evelyn and Marcus make up and form a truce.
Chapter 56, Tobias thinks about erasing his memory and everything that has to do with Beatrice, but then Christina saves the day and the two have a heart to heart.
In the Epilogue, two and a half years after the final book’s events, Evelyn visits Tobias at his new apartment in the Faction Territory. We are also told that Uriah was unplugged only a few weeks after Tris’s death.
Even though Four is afraid of heights, he takes the zipline that Tris loved down the Hancock building with her ashes falling off his back.
