YOUNG ADULT: How did you get your start in entertainment?

AMERICAN AUTHORS: The story started at Berklee college of music in Boston. Basically we all went to school to pursue a career in music. Through friends of friends we found each other. For years we played together and wrote the best songs we could. 2013 has been a roller coaster of a year for us. We created songs that were not only special to us, but special to many people all over the world. Entertainment outlets wanted to use the songs for commercials, movies, sporting events and more. It all kind of happened at once. We are extremely grateful!

YA: What was it like being on The Carrie Diaries?

AA: Carrie Diaries was an amazing opportunity for the band. We loved being a part of it. The cast is incredibly talented, the show is very entertaining. Best part of the show was we were given the chance to recreate a song from the 80’s. Covers and recreation of songs are definitely an outlet we love to explore. It’s challenging and fun. It’s awesome to take a song and breathe fresh air into it, add modern elements yet keep the integrity intact. It was a blast to be on the show.

YA: What kind of influence has the 80’s had on your music?

AA: The 80’s were an incredible era in music, you had the king of pop himself Michael Jackson, Prince, Genesis, Madonna, Hall and Oates, pop like New Kids on the Block, New Edition, artists of new urban like Lionel Richie, the glorious voice of Whitney Houston… We did a cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors”, just cause it was fun. We won a car from doing that! Synth driven elements in songs and dance anthems were really influential to us growing up. Music is really incredible In that way. You can reinvent what you love. We loved the 80’s. Shout out to Bon Jovi too πŸ™‚

YA: What has been your biggest success to date?

AA: Our biggest success to date now is cracking the Billboard Hot 100 entering at 93 and being number 9 on the Hot AC chart. It’s really been crazy. We are incredibly grateful.

YA: How does it feel to hear your song on the radio?

AA: It’s humbling, exciting, always fun. We always just have that moment when we hear it, we are like, “NO WAY! ” you know. It never gets old.

YA: Do you have a mentor? If so, tell us a little more about him/her.

AA: Our mentors have been our music teachers, our parents, our friends. We learned everything we know from them–they gave us the confidence to keep pushing towards our goals. They were always supportive.

YA: Quick: Pick one adjective to describe the band.

AA: Open-minded.

YA: Who are some of your favorite artists or bands?

AA: Just so happens we were lucky enough to share the stage with many modern alt rock bands in our circuit whom we admire and love. To name some we love, A Silent Film, the Mowglis, Royal Teeth, Airborne Toxic Event, The Royal Concept, Mister Wives. All bands that we’ve toured with and have had a great time with.

YA: Who would you most like to work with?

AA: Well we’d love to collaborate with Paul McCartney sometime, Brian Eno, Rick Rubin, Timbaland. Bono or Chris Martin. You know there are plenty more. But these are some of the many!

YA: What do you have coming up?

AA: Our full length album is coming out in March of 2014, on Island Records. We are so thrilled to share it with the world. It’s been such an an amazing experience creating it and now were are more than excited for its release.

YA: Where do you see the band in 5 years? In 10 years?

AA: Playing tons more shows, writing more tunes. We just are eager to stay busy and we love what we do. The future is bright and full of possibilities.

YA: What are three things you want your fans to know about the band that they might not?

AA: Indian food is the key to our heart.

The outdoors is the key to our soul.

We are four guys who love new experiences, traveling and finding new inspiration along the way.
