Creator Spotlight: Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa

What do Riverdale, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and Katy Keene all have in common? The person who brought each series to life is one and the same! That’s why you may have noticed the glaring hints at similarities between Sabrina, Riverdale, and Katy Keene. So, who is the man behind the magic of these three successful dramas? His name is Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, an accomplished comic book writer and playwright who happened to bring his characters to life (literally).

The creative mind of this developer has led to his major recognition in the TV world through the popular CW dramas he has orchestrated. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa attended prestigious schools to begin assembling his incredible career resume, including Georgetown and Yale. The Archie Andrews and Sabrina Spellman we have all come to know and see would not be in TV existence without Sacasa’s comics based on the same characters.

Back in 2013-14, the 43-year-old wrote a couple of comics for the Archie Comics series. They detailed the lives of Sabrina Spellman and Archie Andrews in two completely distinct works called Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Afterlife With Archie. Because of these comics becoming a hit, Sacasa was in turn named the COO of Archie Comics back in 2013.

That’s not all, though. The accomplished writer has been nominated for a GLAAD award. He is a sitcom creator/executive producer. And he has written and developed at least 10 plays and roughly 15+ comics.

Even for me personally, I can now understand the similarities in the three CW shows. Since they are coming from the same mind, it may be intentional that we see the comparisons. There’s the hangout diner where the main friends get together (Chilling Adventures, Riverdale). There are similar town names (Greendale, Riverdale). Josie McCoy appears in two shows (Riverdale, Katy Keene). And of course the tendency to include PLENTY of shirtless dudes flaunting their abs all the time (Archie, Reggie, Nick, Caliban, etc.)

For all the success the talented individual has had in multiple fields of creative development during his illustrious career, you may think what else could he do to top it off? Well, it just so happens that when it rains, it pours. The Riverdale creator has created another couple shows, including The Shelley Society and The Brides. Both are of the supernatural and horror genres. And the Shelley Society is expected to be on HBO Max. Currently, both shows are in the early stages of development.

Most of us may have first heard about Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa through Riverdale. (And that’s if you pay attention to the opening credits). But we won’t be seeing the last of him in the entertainment industry anytime soon. In fact, this may just be the beginning of a whole new interest coming to life for the developer. And that is make riveting TV shows. And honestly, I (and hopefully you) can’t complain.
