After a wild first season filled with corsets, clashes, crushes and a shocking cliff hanger, season 2 of Apple TV+’s hit show The Buccaneers is here! Before the season premiere, we chatted with Kristine Froseth and Christina Hendricks, who star as Nan and Patricia, to learn more about playing characters in the 1870s.
The Buccaneers is based on the novel of the same name by American author and Pulitzer Prize winner Edith Wharton. The drama series focuses on a group of young American girls who arrive in 1870s London, resulting in a culture clash as the women try to find husbands and secure titles.
Season 2 will follow the Buccaneers as they are no longer invaders, officially calling England their home. Season 2 picks up with Kristine’s character Nan at the altar. Christina portrays Nan’s mother, Patti.
The show includes a star studded cast, featuring 13 Reasons Why star Alisha Boe, My Fault: London star Matthew Broome, Josh Dylan, and Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester. If you want to learn more about the cast and the inspiration behind the show, watch our interview with show creator Katherine Jakeways from season 1.
You may already recognize Kristine from her roles in Netflix’s The Society, the Hulu series Looking for Alaska and in the Showtime series The First Lady. Christina is in a category of her own, having won two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Critics’ Choice Awards for her role as Joan Harris in Mad Men.
The costumes are one of the best parts of the show, filled with overcoats, corsets and dresses, all with a contemporary twist. Both Kristine and Christina joked that while they loved getting into character during that time period, they are glad they don’t have to wear them off set.
Kristine: “Maybe Nan would do links to resources [in her bio].”
Christina said she realized just how difficult it is to do simple tasks because of the sheer volume of the dresses. Things like getting through doors, going to the bathroom and dancing were things the cast all had to learn how to do in their costumes, but talk about dedication for a period piece!
Christina: “The one thing I find uncomfortable is the bustle.”
