Letter From The Editor

This past month was filled with the unexpected. The Tribeca Film Festival brought many new stars to the red carpet, and one very talented actor shared his experience in creating a film called At Any Price (review here). I’m talking about none other then A-lister (or YA-lister) Zac Efron! In the film, Zac plays the son of a corn farmer who rebels by becoming a racecar driver, and he spoke about how he used to go with his dad and brother to a figure 8 track and how he once witnessed a ‘gnarly’ crash. People look at celebrities as if they’re more than actual people, but they draw from the same personal experiences and memories that we all do. It’s true—they really are ‘Just Like Us’. While we have jobs in writing and baking, the distinction is that their job is to help us forget who we are.

Tribeca opened up my eyes to new possibilities in film. One film held a very special place in my heart, and that was  G.B.F. G.B.F., or Gay Best Friend, is the story of a boy navigating his way through high school and dealing with his sexuality. Four girls (Sasha Pieterse of PLL, Andrea Bowen of Desperate Housewives, and Joanna ‘JoJo’ Levesque) go out of their way in search of their GBF, Michael J. Willett (of United States of Tara). For his part, Willett talks with his best friends (Molly Tarlov of Awkward, and Derek Mio of Greekclick here for our interview with Derek) about coming out and feeling comfortable with his surroundings. The result is one hilarious and outrageous ensemble where feelings and companionship are more than just sexualized; these are real and powerful performances that ring true with every emotion.

For this month, G.B.F. is my go-to must-see, as soon as it hits theaters. Check out the interview with star Derek Mio, as well as our interview with Karynn Moore, star of the new ABC Family pilot Twsited (premiering June 11th).

Let your summer be full of entertainment, and enjoy!
